PHOTOS & VIDEO (GLIMPSE): Police say the loose bear roaming the area of James Street will continue on its way if left alone. About 50 children and adults came out late Wednesday evening to catch a glimpse of the small black cub climbing up and down the trees.
An officer, equipped with a rifle, stood by in case the bear posed a threat to any residents.
As earlier reported, the bears are usually wary of humans and will not attack unless teased or provoked.
If the bear is located in the morning again, police hope to have wildlife officials take possession of it. TLS.
I wonder where it’s mother is?
although it is somewhat of a “novelty” to see a bear roaming around – people PLEASE do allow your children to agitate this creature & cause it to become frightened, as it will stress the animal out & may cause it to act out of fear.
how was anyone able to see that bear at night?
How did the bear get to lakewood he should leave as fast as he came on a one way ticket
Another undocumented alien!
Why don’t they catch and bring it somewhere?
Where is this bear from? usually dont have loose animals like these around? and its not someones pet that escaped?
maybe it escaped the six flags safari
why why why do you have to say the bear is black?????
does the color make any difference?????
it probably didnt listen to his mom and wandered off, somewhere and now is just trying to get back to where his family is.
Keep taking away the living space for any animal….I’ve never seen so many deer, skunks and vultures in Lakewood…keep cutting down the trees. Where else can they go. How do you like it when they are in your back yard…
To the cop with the ar15, you’d be better off with a 12gauge slug than a .223 round against a bear
Why can’t the wild life people take position of it NOW!
Thanks ari, but Lakewood doesn’t carry slugs.
The residents of North Dover should start sending out urgent notices………..
Way to go #10. You said it all!!!
To #7.
Yeah it’s my pet bear. It wasn’t getting along with the lion and the tiger so it decided to go for a late-night stroll.
just leave it alone.
Yeah, sure, I’ll just tell my three-year old playing in our backyard, “Sweetie-pie, if you ever encounter a bear – black or otherwise – just let it be…”
Tranq the darn thing already!!!
How come everyone just can’t leave the bear alone and let him wander his way back into the woods? All the people that keep actively looking for the bear are probably just confusing it with all the commotion. JUST LEAVE IT ALONE!!!
#9 it does make a difference. NJ has brown bear and black. I beleive the brown are more aggressive.
leave my brother alone. He can travel up to 20 miles a day, running 25-30 mph, but not if everyone gets in his way. He climbs up the tree either to eat or get away from his enemies, you. Breeding period starts around now for the next two months. And no Mr. N.N., he is not an alien, he is an american black bear.
That poor bear! When he was in Howell and Jackson there was no issue, but now the bear has to be protected from being provoked because he’s in lakewood. People here can’t be trusted to leave nature alone.
I’m sure if the bear knew how dangerous it is to travel the streets of lakewood he would have turned around!
#21 you are ignorent. the color has nothing to do with it. to be aggressive is nothing to do with color it is just the individuel. stop picking on minorities
He will leave town as soon as he sees his kids aren’t getting into school.
#19 maybe you shouldn’t let your 3 year old play in the yard while there is still the possibility of a bear roaming around…
with the way trash builds up around this town that bear isnt going anywhere , clean up your property and stop littering
To #9
brown bears are very dangerous!
black are okay-ish if you dont tease them.
just shoot it already
what are you waiting for ???
Bears are a sign to do teshuva…..
I cant “bear” this anymore
please whatever you do dont hurt it!
Just leave it alone! There’s no need to tranq it or shoot it, just let it continue on its way
i really dont understand this town…WHY DONT YOU JUST CATCH THAT THING ALREADY????????????? send it back to the zoo!!!!
do we really have to wait for s/t to chas vshalom happen????
why don’t we show just him what the property taxes are for those that stay here. That bear will move out of of Lakewood REAL fast!
People really need to teach their children not to provoke any animals, I have dogs, and see how kids in this area are not used to animals and tease them! Parents need to teach their children that what they are doing is animal cruelty!!!!!!
Why is it alowed to wonder around populated area. Bears do kill people!
Why are they taking the chance?
I love the police dept.but this one boggles the mind, what will they say if somebody gets injured or killed by this bear, what are you waiting for take it to a zoo !
White (polar) bears are the most dangerous bears of all. If you see one – run!
does anyone know were it came from
He is probably in Lakewood to attend a bear mitzvah.
