Agudath Israel Condemns NY Post’s Lack Of “Basic Human Dignity”

nypThe following statement was released this evening by Agudath Israel in response to the NY Post’s coverage of the brutal murder of Menachem (Max) Stark Z”L.

The New York Post crossed a line today, even for a paper specializing in the sensational, with its offensive front-page cover and equally offensive coverage of the vicious murder of a young Hassidic father of eight, Menachem Stark, Hy”d.

The paper demonstrated the poorest taste by choosing to focus on anonymous accusations rather than on the human tragedy of a wife and family’s sudden and terrible loss, and on their, and their community’s, grieving. Particularly at a time when Jews have been attacked on New York streets and are regularly vilified by hateful people around the world, the tabloid has demonstrated unprecedented callousness and irresponsibility.

Perhaps it is unrealistic to expect very much from a medium like the Post, but one should, we think, be able to expect some basic human decency in the wake of a family’s terrible personal loss.

Agudath Israel of America and its constituents, along with decent people of all religions and ethnicities, extend our deepest sympathies to Mr. Stark’s widow and children.

We, further, commend the New York Police Department for its active pursuit of leads to Mr. Stark’s murderers, and pray that they be apprehended and brought to justice swiftly.

  1. What people don’t get is- the tabloids ‘thrive’ on these kinds of reactions.

Ignore it. Why are we having such a hard time getting our heads wrapped around that?

  2. I agree, they are trying to be provocative, it’s what they do. But there’s a certain point where the line is crossed. Making rallies, press conferences and signing petitions plays right into their hands. They need to be hit in the wallet. Everyone should write a letter or two to a Post advertiser. Once they start losing revenue they will pay attention mighty quickly.

  3. The NYP is disgusting. Sadly, they wont care what we do. The Post is one tiny cog in Murdochs multi-billion dollar media empire.

  4. The only way the NY Post will get the message is if posters are printed up with reporter Hella Winston’s picture, or publisher Jesse Angelo’s picture, or editor Col Allan’s picture, emblazoned across a NY Post front page with the similar caption, “WHO DESN’T WANT HER/HIM DEAD?” They have a lot of enemies now, so it’s just reflecting what some people might say. Let’s see how THEY feel when its them. I’d love to see the howling when that happens.

  5. A high school student grabbed a Jewish female classmate, held a lighter to her hair and said out loud, “let’s burn the Jew,” but a Canadian judge concluded that the incident was “not racially motivated.”

The incident between two 15 year old Winnipeg, Canada high school students took place in 2011.

The lawyer for the defendant claimed, essentially, it was the girl’s fault her hair caught on fire.

He said his client grabbed the girl, lit the lighter and made the comments, but her hair caught fire when she pulled away. He also said that referring to the girl as “the Jew” was simply the way people interacted at the school, and the defendant was not the only one who called her that. He referred to his client as “a jerk and a bully,” but said the incident was “impulsive and unplanned.”

The defendant’s therapist claimed the incident was an “impulsive teenage action.”

Winnipeg’s Provincial Court Judge Robert Finlayson, before whom the trial was held, agreed with the defense. While he called the act “totally vulgar and inappropriate,” Finlayson said he was satisfied it was not racially motivated.

Given the judge was unwilling to classify saying “let’s burn the Jew” and then actually grabbing a Jew and burning her hair as anti-Semitic, perhaps he should be praised for also stating that the school culture in which this kind of incident was commonplace was was “unhealthy and dark and there’s no place for it in society.”

The victim claimed the incident “changed her world upside down.” She needed therapy to deal with her fears. She also believes that the people in the school blamed her for making a big deal of the incident.

The now-17 year old defendant was not given any prison time. Instead, the court ordered him to serve 18 months of supervised probation. He also has to seek out counseling, write a letter of apology to the victim and perform 75 hours of community service work, according to the Winnipeg Free Press. In an earlier stage of the prosecution, the defendant pleaded guilty to assault with a weapon.

  6. I have never read the post and don’t know its advertisers. I’d be happy to write some emails and make phone calls but won’t buy the paper to do so!

  7. You cant consider it racially motivated as Judaism is a religion not a race most jews are of either European middle eastern desent I would classify it as religious bias

  8. If you have any returns to make at Macy’s or Target, two big Post advertisers, state that the reason for your return is because you do not want to patronize Post advertisers. The customer service reps typically have to write down whatever you tell them. It’s something…
