In 2013, an article on TLS suggested the town builds a bridge over Lake Carasaljo in an effort to reduce traffic between the North and South of Lakewood.
But that dream may not be a reality for a long time.
“There are two big issues,” Mayor Coles told TLS.
“The biggest issue is the DEP,” says Coles. “Look at Vine Street – that’s only about 30 feet and look what a nightmare that is.”
Being that the Lake is a big factor in the area water supply, anything that can potentially cause an issue, will likely face many obstacles with the DEP, Coles says.
In fact, says the Mayor, one of the issues along the way of widening Route 9, is the Lake area – which runs into the same DEP issue.
Additionally, says the Mayor, a project like that would likely cost the Town tens of millions of dollars.
So for now, we’ll just have to rely on the other traffic improvements being considered.

Does the DEP take into considiration the effects of traffic congestion on the environment? Most certainly not! If they would, they would approve two bridges over the lake.
Traffic is not the only problem in Lakewood. Another result of over development has been the fact that a once beautiful town is getting uglier. How can they even think of taking away one of the most beautiful assets of our town by building a bridge over the lake?!?! It might alleviate traffic but it wouldn’t be worth the loss of such a beautiful part of Lakewood. There are many other things that can be done to alleviate traffic. Please leave the lake alone!!!

I do not understand. The article repeats presumptions of what may or may not be a problem with the DEP. Instead of presuming things, why don’t we know? Doesn’t anyone know what the DEP’s regulations are? Did any start the process with the DEP. Our town has a serious traffic issue. If building a bridge over the lake is one of the possible solutions, should we not know by now whether is a viable solution or not? It either is or isn’t. If it is not, then let’s not talk about it anymore, and concentrate on talking about solutions that are viable.
How about a walking bridge would not affect the environment much but many people will get to this side of the lake quicker by walking over rather than driving around
The people saying to fill up the lake remind me of the guy sitting on a boat digging a hole under his seat thinking it’s nobody else’s business.
Hello! The lake is part of a river! Fill up the lake and you will have flooding for miles around!
Let the widening of Rt 9 take its course and see how that works. Understand also that there are breeding grounds around the lake for many birds and animals. There is no area that you could put a bridge that wouldn’t affect that. If people were so concerned about traffic they should have thought about that before moving here and adding to the mess.
There’s gotta be a way to build a bridge that won’t ruin the lake area’s beauty – and could even also enhance it, and wouldn’t cause any harm to the natural environment.
I like the walking bridge idea and it can be made very nice in a way that doesn’t make the town uglier

But it about 4 feet wide. doesn’t mean it needs to turn into a lake it can continue as a river or more practical an under ground waterway so you can by pass the whole need for bridges. And to satisfy the emotional response “we need the beauty” lake manetta you can keep!!
lets get some pics of other towns that have a walking bridge or a small car bridge , a bridge can be very ascetic, todays and sweet, the birds are nice but people go first finally lowering the traffic and pollution and encouraging people to walk is also good for the enviroment
