The other day, nine-year old Shira T. called in to our Chai Lifeline Lakewood office and stated simply, “I want to volunteer for Chai Lifeline.”
Shira explained that she had a friend who was ill, and she knew that Chai Lifeline did a lot for her. Shira wanted to do something special as well, such as visiting sick children in the hospital.
Unfortunately, we did not have anything to offer Shira because the volunteer work is more appropriate for high school ages and older. However, her sincerity and obvious desire to contribute touched us. Shira’s call represented one of many such phone calls which we receive frequently.
That day, we sat down to discuss it and soon after an idea was born. We innovated this sefira program to give children an opportunity to contribute, through performing acts of chesed as a zechus for the sick children in our community.
Throughout the days of sefira until Shavuos, all Lakewood children are invited to spread kindness through performing an act of chesed for someone else. Then, they can share their kindness with us through writing about it and submitting it to our office via mail or email with the subject line “Attn: Sefira Campaign”.
May their acts of kindness open the gates of rachamim and act as a zechus for the speedy recovery of children facing medical illnesses in our community.
