2011 Shaping Up To Be Worst Year For Allergy Sufferers

sneezingIf you are sneezing and itching your eyes this spring allergy season, you are not alone. 2011 is shaping up to be the worst year for allergy sufferers on record. More than 35 million American suffer from pollen allergies, according to the FDA . Every year, the United States spends $21 billion on health costs related to allergies.

A study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the USA searched for the cause of a trend towards longer allergy seasons.

Researchers found that a delayed first frost of the fall season and a lengthening of the frost-free season combined with increasing levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere have contributed to a longer allergy season. Longer pollen seasons increase human exposure, the duration of symptoms and severity of symptoms. More in ABC.

  1. That’s what it is ! Thanx so much for telling me. My daughter, who suffers terribly, is going nuts. I thought she’s, at least partially, making it worse than it is. And I tell her ” last year wasn’t this bad” – shame on me. I didn’t know different years have different levels of severity. Wow, thanx TLS for writing this. Now, I have togo hm, apologize to my daughter & maybe buy her an ice-cream, and some sushi, and a camera, new sneakers, iPod …

  2. My teenage daughter suffers terribly. I’m upset because she goes to school & tells the teacher to keep the windows shut. Teacher says fine. Then it gets hot. Now we need the a/c. The office says, um, its 60 deg ouitside , t should I put on the a/c. They’re right, except my daughter is in agony. She didn’t goto school at all on Friday. I told her she can stay home any time she wants. I can’t send her to a torture chamber.

  3. Wow!! I’m suffering terriably and my parents couldn’t understand why it was so much worse this year then all the other years!! I’m suffering tremendously and I feel for all those out there!!!

  4. Enough of this green space garbage! Cut down these trees who cause terrible suffering. I am not joking, the green is bad for our health.

  5. They’re right ! This year is NOT STAM nasty. My daughter
Refuses togo on the bus, cuz they leave the windows open the pollen kills her. Really hurts her, I mean. It didn’t actually, y’know, um, like, kill her.

  6. yup, its crazy. i work in a school setting, and i HARDLY ever take off. this season, i almost stayed home 3 days already. (almost-i went every day). but i literally cant breathe. no eye makeup for me since pesach, or i have black lines all over. and when i take my students out to the playground, forget about it! i also dont go anywhere without a box of tissues. its CRAZY!

  7. For the past 25 years i have had terrible allergies (hay and rose fever) which caused me to miss many school / work days each season even while taking medication and shots. 3 years ago someone mentioned that he also suffered terribly and went on the Fit-For-Life diet which worked. I then started it (just for during allergy season) and it works wonders. I did not take medication since and would even go out to cut the grass.

  8. Yep I don’t undertsand how I suffer terriably n I’m a teenaged girl who sits through 8 hours of school a day and all the teachers and students who are hot insist on keeping the windows open and the schools don’t want to put on the air conditioning on so everyone is comfortable for the day and us with allergies go home and the suffering doesn’t stop untill the next morning when the cycle repeats! Please, if you are a teacher, reconsider before opening the windows because us students are embarresed to ask to keep them closed thank you

  9. I have been suffering from allergies since I moved to Lakewood 8 years ago. I tried many treatments with varying results. For the last 3 years I have been using Sunshine’s Allergy Relief with tremendous results, this year as well. I feel almost normal, and that’s a long way from having difficulty breathing. Sunshine’s Allergy Relief is Kosher L’Pesach (no kitnios), as well, so you can start using it before the season begins and through Pesach. You can find Sunshine’s Allergy Relief in a local health food store near you.
P.S. My intention in recommending Allergy Relief is based on my positive experience and I wish to help others. Of course, be safe and do your own research.

  10. I would like to thank all those who posted suggestions and advice. I am having a non-stop sufferring period of allergy torture and I tried nearly everything to stop them and nothin is working. Last year I went to an allergist and I got tested with the forty pricks and I am allergic to 17-20 stuff and for someone like me who doesn’t handle pain, NOW THATS GOTTA HURT!!! It is murder to control all over them especially that I’m allergi to bed mytes so I sleep on what I’m allergic too. Thanks again for your helpful advice and may all us allergy sufferers have a quick refuah bikarov!!!!
