A 17-year-old driver with just a permit crashed in Toms River, leaving an Uber Driver and passenger injured, officials tell TLS.
On February 23, multiple Toms River Police officers – as well as Toms River EMS, Pleasant Plains EMS, and Manchester EMS – responded to a serious accident on Route 9 and Riverwood Drive.
An initial investigation shows that a vehicle operated by a 17-year-old female with a permit only was driving with an unlicensed 17-year-old passenger. As the vehicle exited the driveway in the 1900 block of Route 9, the driver nearly collided with a vehicle that was heading southbound on Route 9.
The 17-year-old driver lost control of the vehicle and crossed into the northbound lanes, where it collided with a second vehicle, which was being operated as an UBER rideshare vehicle.
The driver of the Uber vehicle sustained injuries to her chest and knees. The passenger in that vehicle, also a female, sustained serious, but non-life-threatening injuries including a head laceration, facial injury, and reported what appears to be lower-body paralysis.
The father of the 17-year-old driver responded to the scene and told police he had allowed his daughter to take the vehicle to pick her mother up from work.
