Plainclothes officers from the Lakewood Police Department are conducting a pedestrian safety enforcement operation in Lakewood today, targeting drivers who fail to yield to pedestrians in marked crosswalks.
Officers are positioned at various crosswalks and are observing motorists as pedestrians enter or approach the crosswalk. Drivers who fail to yield are being pulled over by police and may be issued summonses.
The operation is aimed at increasing awareness of pedestrian right-of-way laws and improving safety for pedestrians crossing busy roads.
Motorists are reminded to remain alert and to slow down when approaching marked crosswalks, particularly in areas with heavy pedestrian traffic.
Police are urging drivers to exercise caution and yield to pedestrians as required by law.
This is just what we are missing in Lakewood. Enforcement of a law that makes very little sense and totally random.

Shkoyach on them! There should be cameras all over the city, it will bring $$$ to the municipality. Drivers almost never respect pedestrians’ right of way, especially outside of Westgate when crossing new Egypt road.
How about stop sign, red and yellow light violators, crossing lane markings, passing on the right? The police are outnumbered. Did I mention the phones?
Right. But pedestrians are the must vulnerable ones on the roads. You don’t a police guy at each crossroads, just a camera.

Are you referring to the Lutzk area where you have people jumping out of cars and running across the street without a crosswalk at all hours of the day and night?

Sometimes a high-foot-traffic area may be a good nomination for a pedestrian crossing signal type of light – such as by the hill of 6th St & Clifton Ave – where there is a button that peds can press that lights up a notice type of signal. It’s not a regular traffic light, but a clear yellow light that blinks. (It’s probably because since it’s at the top of a steep hill.)
Also, it’s important in general that a high foot-traffic area be well lit at night. If it’s not, contact the twp public works at 732-905-3405 or electric company at 888-LIGHTSS.
I wouldn’t say drivers don’t yield – they do, though there may be room for improvement.
BTW, about pedestrians waiting to cross, I looked up info; even by 4-way stops, the order of arrival applies only to cars; peds. always go first. That is as long as they are ready to cross. Meaning if a car and ped. stop at the intersection at the same time, the ped goes first. Obviously, the car doesn’t have to wait for the ped to get to the corner, but if he’s already there, he goes first. How much more so if he has already begun crossing.

Finally, about time. They should be giving out tickets as well to those who don’t put away their garbage cans and use the money towards the busses
At least he is wearing bright color clothing so you can see him but don’t you think they should first focus giving tickets on the people that park on the corners (or too close to it)? How can you see someone crossing at the very beginning of their are cars parked in the corners. Is anyone home stop focusing playing a game of cops and robbers and having fun giving the tickets when there are more important tickets to be Distributed. Why be issuing tickets in plain clothing when you can sit in your car with the lights blaring giving out tickets for running reds and stop signs. Wake up and stop playing games with the people in this town!!!
How about teaching pedestrians to cross safely, and keeping off the phones, being aware of their surroundings…? It’s getting out of hand!
In some cities they’ve installed red light IN THE SIDEWALK AT THE CORNER, so people notice it. But I think that’s insane [if we need to come onto that].

LPD Stationing NBA Players at Lakewood Crosswalks to Teach Street-Crossing Pedestrians the Famous ‘Crossover’ Move
NBA players will soon be teaching their signature ‘Crossover’ move at crosswalks all across Lakewood as the town’s pedestrians navigate the arduous task of crossing Lakewood’s busy streets and crosswalks.
“Successfully avoiding an oncoming vehicle when crossing the street is one of the most daunting tasks that a pedestrian can face,” a senior Lakewood Township official told reporters on Sunday, “which is why we are stationing NBA players at various crosswalks all across Lakewood to teach the street-crossing community the NBA’s signature ‘crossover’ move.”
A veteran NBA player who’s been tapped to teach the classic basketball maneuver at one of the towns busy crosswalks told reporters on Sunday that the ‘Crossover’ move is one of the very first moves he learned as a young player.
“Trust me,” he said, “once pedestrians master the ‘Crossover’ move, they’ll be able to zip right past any car that comes their way.”
“With the Crossover move,” he explained, “you trick drivers into thinking that you’re about to walk toward the left side of their vehicles, but then you pull a fast one on them, and you quickly dart in the opposite direction toward the right side of their vehicles. It’s a flawless technique that Lakewood pedestrians can use over and over again as they navigate Lakewood’s busy streets and crosswalks.”
The veteran NBA player added: “Lakewood pedestrians have nothing to worry about because I’ll be there at the crosswalks guiding them through the ‘Crossover’ move every step of the way, and, of course, the first responders will also be there in case of emergency.”
Am I the only one noticing that the “pedestrian” walked into the crosswalk when the car was too close to stop safely?

Yes, we respect the police to the sky, and appreciate bringing more awareness and sometimes that comes with people hearing about tickets. Our community certainly doesn’t go for the Defund the Police mentality. But it would seem to me that in the second piece in the second video – starting at about 23 seconds, it seems that both the ped. and car began crossing the intersection at the same time, and for the car to stop, they would have had to short stop. It’s a bit hard to judge distance at an angle from a 2D vid, but that’s what it seems like. Still, TY LPD

My mother told me to look both ways when crossing the street. Can’t believe I got such a bad upbringing! Never look, just go, the police will give the ticket. Even if I get run over, at least I’ll be right!
I looked over the clips, I didn’t see anyone crossing without looking. Both clips begin right when they begin crossing. Also, people can hear an oncoming car..
The officers did a great job. My favorite little cop wasn’t involved. But know he would have done a great job.
They should really practice what they preach. About 3 months ago I almost got ran over on cedarbridge, when myself and my 10-year-old daughter were crossing legally in the crosswalk by out to lunch. A Lakewood
cop driving a police vehicle didn’t even look or slow down for us and he almost ran us over. Hashem watched over us.
Yeah but there was no civilian in police uniform hiding out waiting to ticket him.
You don’t need to be In plainclothes to catch traffic or other related violations.
It’s all day everyday in front of marked cars as well.
you just need to start enforcement – that’s the key.
