BREAKING: Governor Murphy Signs Legislation to Enshrine Marriage Equality into State Law

Governor Murphy today signed into law S3416, which codifies marriage equality in New Jersey law by providing that all laws concerning marriage and civil union are to be read with gender neutral intent. Marriage equality currently exists in New Jersey based on state and federal Court decisions. This new law demonstrates the Governor and Legislature’s commitment to protecting marriage equality by codifying it into New Jersey law.

“Despite the progress we have made as a country, there is still much work to be done to protect the LGBTQ+ community from intolerance and injustice. New Jersey is stronger and fairer when every member of our LGBTQ+ family is valued and given equal protection under the law,” said Governor Murphy. “I am honored to sign legislation that represents our New Jersey values and codifies marriage equality into state law.”

Primary sponsors of the bill include Senators Steve Sweeney, Loretta Weinberg, and Vin Gopal, and Assemblymembers Valerie Vainieri Huttle, Mila M. Jasey, Annette Quijano, Andrew Zwicker, and Joann Downey.

This legislation brings New Jersey statutory law into conformance with the 2013 decision in Garden State Equality v. Dow as well as the 2015 United Supreme Court decision in Obergefell v. Hodges, which held that same-sex marriage is a fundamental right and that all states are required to allow same-sex couples to marry. Enacting S3416 into law ensures that the right to same-sex marriage will continue to exist in New Jersey even if these state and federal court precedents were to be overturned.

    • @Spellcheck get over it. He would have won even if every single Lakewood voter had voted against him. He won by 70,000 votes. There are only 50,000 voters in Lakewood. In regards to my feelings about this action of the Governor’s see my comment below.

      • If he won by 70,000 votes and Lakewood is 50,000 and you take all the votes that Lakewood did vote for him …so each vote is 1 less for Murphy and 1 more to other party so really each switch vote is 2 vote difference

        • I know my math. Only 7000 voters in Lakewood actually voted for Murphy. I was saying that there are only 50,000 eligible Lakewood Voters. Nice try.

  1. maybe we should redefine who the governor is and let him learn the lessons of life on his own skin the world cannot be changed and someone who tries to do so ends up redrawing the circle of functionals with himself on the outside

      • The moral decay of the Christian right in this country is far worse. If this bill is a slap in their faces, that is a good thing for us.
Their leaders and politicians are the biggest two faced skunks the world has ever seen. All politicians lie, but the evil of the Christian right is way worse than that of AOC and her squad. We in Lakewood are generally immune to the speeches of the televangelists and rabid preachers on the right, but they are truly loathsome. Watch them on Youtube and you will see. They are the hypocrites with multiple abortions on their cheshbon as they rail about morality. Thieves and scum.
We should keep as far away from these pigs as possible.

  3. I think a country that allows such marriages, we can compare it to an elevator that is malfunctioning. Imagine being in an elevator that suddenly breaks down and you are going downward at the speed of 40 mph and no one knows how to slow down the elevator.
When former President Obama signed into law this new marriage mess, it was on a Friday and that same night (Friday night) there was a rainbow in the sky in Washington DC.

  4. This is absolutely terrible news.
Next thing is they’re gonna require the schools to teach their side.
Can’t say I’m shocked, to be honest.
We all knew this would happen.
    Terrible.
And we all voted from him, knowing this would happen.
    Maybe not all, but most.

  5. Now in Yeshiva Purim Shpeils Bochurim must be careful not to say “Harei Attah Mikudeshes” lest under Dina Dmalchusa it’s considered a Kosher wedding requiring a Gett.

  6. first was the covid nursing home fiasco, then came the legalization of substances which can lead to an overdose, and now the intrusion into family stability and neighborhood safety

even if he is voted out of the capital his legacy of social damage will haunt this state as long as he can be remembered
