Working as a Night Office Cleaner: Things you Need to Keep in Mind

Working as a night cleaner requires you to work in a deserted and empty office. This can be strange and even daunting at first, especially if you are not used to working in such environments.

However, today’s night office cleaner jobs can also be more rewarding than you might imagine. Working nights means fewer people around and fewer distractions.

You can get your work done faster without performance monitoring watching over your shoulder the whole time. Working at night also means leaving earlier than everyone else and spending more time with family or friends during daylight hours.

We asked career counselors at Jooble what makes a good night’s office cleaner, and it turns out there are some essential things you need to know. Here are five of the several things that you need to keep in mind if you’re interested in becoming a night cleaner:

  • Know the schedule before you start

Before you start working as a night cleaner, you must know the schedule of your cleaning rounds and frequency. Some offices might require their cleaners to come in once a week, and others might hire their cleaners every other night.

Knowing your cleaning schedule will help you organize your life better and ensure you’re prepared for each night you have to work. Remember that the office you’re cleaning might also have specific requirements. For example, some offices might want their floors cleaned every night, whereas others only want their feet cleaned once a week.

  • The equipment you’ll be using

Sometimes you might be given a unique vacuum cleaner for night cleaning. The vacuum cleaner may have smaller wheels, so it can be moved on the floor.

Ensure you are familiar with its operation and have the relevant training to use it. You may also be given a particular mop with a sponge and a disposable pad.

You will have to use the sponge with a cleaning solution to mop the floor and then throw it away after use. You can use the disposable pad side to dry the floor as well.

Sometimes, you might be given a particular machine that sucks up the water and cleans the mop pad. You will have to have a bucket or container to collect the water that has been cleaned.

Be aware of your surroundings

Being aware of your surroundings while working as a night cleaner is essential. This will help you stay safe and avoid unnecessary accidents.

If you’re working at a big company, there’s a chance you may be cleaning floors that contain sensitive information. Make sure you’re not leaving your cleaning equipment and always put it away.

You also don’t want to leave any marks on the floor or leave too much of a mess. If you’re working at a bank, it’s crucial to ensure you don’t go near the vault or any other restricted room. Make sure you don’t enter any rooms you’re not supposed to.

Communication is key

Working as a night cleaner means you’ll be alone most of the time. Don’t forget to ensure a direct line of communication with your employer. They can reach you if an emergency or something needs to be addressed immediately.

Also, ensure you have a direct line of communication with your supervisor so you can ask questions when needed. Communication is vital at the office, and it’s even more critical when you’re working alone.

Don’t forget to take breaks

Working as a night cleaner can be tiring and stressful. You may be tired after coming home from a long day at work and then going to the office to clean for several more hours.

It’s essential to take breaks when you need them. Make sure you’re resting and getting enough sleep, and also remember to eat healthily and drink lots of water. Talk to your supervisor and request a break if you’re feeling too stressed out and affecting your work.

The Bottom Line

Working as a night cleaner can allow you to earn extra income while also giving you more free time during the day. It can also be an exciting and rewarding job, especially if you like being alone and do not get distracted when there are fewer people around. Just be keen to know all the basics.
