PHOTO: Many have been wondering why Lake Carasaljo appears to have dried up over the past few days, and replaced with an odor emanating from the area.
No, they are not building homes there just yet, and there hasn’t been a drought.
It’s the time of year when the lake is manually drained prior to Winter in order to naturally kill the weeds and fungus growing within the lake, without using chemicals.
The procedure is performed by opening the flood gates, allowing the water run downstream until the desired water level is reached.
The water is usually restored after the under-growths die down and the debris is cleaned up – which is generally sometime in January.

If you are a true and long time resident of Lakewood you would know this happens every year.
what happens to all the fish?
Dear “Wondering”: We are sooo proud that you are a “true” and long-time resident! Keep up your great work!
This does not happen every year. They have skipped the past few years. I live by the lake
By the way it’s not a lake, it’s a river called “lake Carasaljo”.
You can see the brook in a middle still flowing.
Silly —–you know fish swim south for the winter , just like lil Birdies ,,,
Dear Chaim , thank you for acknowledging my true patriotism to this township and praising me for what I stand for.
At times bodies have been found
the fish are turned into sushi 🙂
Thanks for this article, we are new to the area and were curious what was going on with the lake/river.
Dear Wondering, don’t let it get to your head (and I sure hope you noted the sarcasm in my original comment).
