A woman was transported by helicopter to Jersey Shore University Hospital after being struck by a vehicle in Manchester on Friday afternoon.
Two off duty firefighters from Whiting, one who was returning home from work and one who was walking with their family, found the patient, 77-year-old Martha J. Mosley of Whiting, NJ, lying in the intersection with severe injuries to her entire body. Due to the severity of her injuries, they requested a helicopter to transport her to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, where she is listed in critical condition.
The vehicle, a 2014 Toyota Corolla driven by 45-year-old Karla Carrizales of Manchester, NJ, remained at the scene and was found to have damage to the front end and windshield. The driver was uninjured.
The investigation revealed that the Toyota was traveling west on Pershing Avenue while Martha was walking south on Tuckerton Avenue, attempting to cross the roadway with her dog. The Toyota struck Martha within the intersection with the front end of the vehicle. Upon impact, Martha was thrown approximately twenty feet, coming to rest on the roadway. The Toyota immediately pulled over and came to a stop on the right side of Pershing Avenue.
While the investigation into the crash is still ongoing, police state that sun glare and failure to yield appear to be the primary contributing factors.
Assisting at the scene were firefighters and EMTs from the Manchester Township Division of Emergency Medical Services, paramedics from Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, and the NJSP South Star Air Medical Helicopter.
