A 22-year-old woman from Lacey Township has been charged in connection with a hit-and-run crash that left a pedestrian seriously injured in Toms River late Saturday night.
According to Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer, Cagla Nemutlu was arrested and charged with Knowingly Leaving the Scene of a Motor Vehicle Crash Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury following the incident, which occurred at approximately 11:25 p.m. on July 19 in the Winteringham Village complex.
Officers from the Toms River Township Police Department responded to the scene after receiving reports of a pedestrian being struck by a vehicle. Upon arrival, they discovered a 60-year-old man with severe injuries. He was transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, where he remains in critical but stable condition.
A joint investigation by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit-Vehicular Homicide Squad, the Toms River Police Detective Bureau, and the Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit revealed that Nemutlu was exiting a parking space in the complex when she struck two men. Authorities say she fled the scene at a high rate of speed without stopping or offering assistance.
The second victim sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene.
Nemutlu was located within the complex and taken into custody without incident. She is currently being held at the Ocean County Jail pending a detention hearing.
