As always with supply and demand, when there’s too much demand and not enough supply, the demand does not get met. Especially in the recent months and the down economy, even the government is budgeting. Not hiring new staff, laying workers off and making the regulations for children to get approved for services tougher, it is leaving more and more therapists without a job.
“JayCare Therapy, a Philadelphia based early intervention agency has somewhat of a reverse scenario”, says Jack of JayCare. “They have a large amount of children waiting for services and not enough therapist to service them”.
“Throughout the last number of years there has been somewhat of a therapist craze amongst Frum girls” says Jack. “From going to school to become a physical, occupational or speech therapist to becoming special educators and social workers, it became one of the most chosen professions in the young Frum community”.
“Just a few years ago, there was a shortage of therapists” Jack says, “and being that the schooling was not crazy, the pay was relatively high and the working hours were somewhat flexible it became the profession of choice”. “The idea of Early Intervention picked up speed and the implementation of therapy for children when they were still at a young age, became mainstream”.
But that all changed, and now dozens of therapists have been laid off.
However, JayCare is currently hiring physical occupational and speech therapists to provide early intervention services for children and their families in their natural environments.
“The pay is substantially high and I’m sure that with the current job market, it will be worth it for many therapists to make the travel out to Philly”, Jack says.
“I hope this will be able to put some people somewhat back on their feet”.
JayCare is a Shomer Shabbos agency and are willing to accommodate the therapists.
