Westgate’s Power On-Off-On Ordeal

Westgate – notorious for losing power in the lightest storms – has been quite unstable for duration of Sandy, with regaining power shortly after the storm but then losing it again on Friday and then getting it back Friday night for a second time.

Firday afternoon, the large development lost power, throwing residents in a frenzy.

Committeeman Steven Langert tells TLS the controlled outage was to allow for the removal of trees from the power lines in the area, but when electric was turned back on, something ignited and caused a fire.

However, knowing that Shabbos was approaching, the JCPL workers made it a priority to restore power in the area – doing whatever it takes, Langert says.

At about 5 PM before Shabbos, TLS was notified that electric would be turned on shortly after the start of Shabbos, and we sent out a News Alert about it. The alert allowed for hundreds of resident to remain home for Shabbos. The power was restored at about 7 PM.

Shortly before the start of Shabbos, wishing to show their appreciation, Committeeman Langert – along with Westgate resident Yossel Slomowitz and Shloime Stern ran to buy donuts and coffee for the employees while thanking them for their tireless work. TLS.

Controlled outage? Brookhill, raintree, county line etc… Area was officially a controlled outage.

24 hours and counting, and no one at jcpl has a clew as to what and why this is going on.

where were the askanim to warn us of the controlled outage which set the panic in the first place!

What about the Seniors

They cut power Erev Shabbos to Country Place without warning and it’s still out! Many seniors there do not drive and did not know what to do. With modern cordless phones, they couldn’t even call for help! What a disaster – and still going on.

the power was shut off for two separate emergencies that occurred within a short period of time. The first, Two poles were broken and on top of a truck and second issue involved live wires that burned down and landed in a heavily traveled area that could have electrocuted someone. In an electrical emergency the safety of the public takes priority. On a normal prearranged outage you will get notification. In emergencies or equipment failure phone calls are not possible. every emergency is different and is often impossible to give an accurate estimate time of restoration of power.
Please keep clear of all power company trucks while they are working in the local areas. The longer they spend answering questions the longer it will take them to restore the power. Let them do their job without interruption for the quickest and SAFEST results. Once the trucks are out of the air is the only SAFE time to ask questions. Venting frustrations out on the workers who are trying to restore your light is counterproductive and often leads to longer outages.

Exuse me Sir Briskerpluber but Yossel Slomowits doesn’t “Belong” to westgate more than he belongs to us !!!! He’s a jew that has a heart that’s big enough 2 carry 100’s if not 1000’s of Achanu bnie yisroel all in his unassuming way so WE (not only in westgate) r lucky we have him !
