Tomorrow, Bike 4 Chai will be kicking off its annual bike ride.
More than 675 cyclists with one shared goal are gearing up for the largest Bike4Chai experience to date. The renowned, premier cycling event benefiting Chai Lifeline will set out from Kalahari Resort in the Poconos to “The World’s Greatest Finish Line” at Camp Simcha in Glen Spey, NY. Riders will celebrate their 165-mile journey with campers, staff, family, and friends.
How did it all start?
On August 3, 2009, The Lakewood Scoop captured the moment the multi-million dollar fundraiser Bike 4 Chai was born.
It all started when Dovid Egert reached out to TLS stating he wasn’t allowed to bring his bike onto the bus heading up to Camp Simcha, Chai Lifeline’s Summer Camp.
So Dovid decided to put out a video on TLS that he plans on biking to camp – a 175-mile trip – and raise some funds while at it (video below).
The announcement video went viral…
So with his bike, his maps, and some water bottles, Dovid broke through a ribbon in front of Chai Lifeline’s office on Clifton Avenue – unknowingly making history (video below).
Bike 4 Chai was born.
Little did he know at the time, he had launched one of the most successful nonprofit fundraisers worldwide.
By the next year, there were 40 bikers, and as the saying goes, the rest is history.
You will hardly even see Bike 4 Chai advertising its registration anymore, and that’s because they’re full the moment it opens.
This year, 10 years later, Bike 4 Chai has already brought in over $12,000,000.
