Lakewood officials this morning met with JCP&L at the scene of Monday’s fatal accident in an effort to bring immediate improvements to the area.
During the meeting at the intersection of Cedarbridge Avenue and MLK Drive, Township Committeeman and JCP&L Liaison Meir Lichtenstein requested an immediate plan to be put into place to upgrade the stretch of the County Road between Route 88 and New Hampshire Avenue.
JCP&L’s John Meehan told officials he would begin immediately to expedite the process of upgrading current street lights and installing new street lights along Cedarbridge Avenue.
Committeeman Lichtenstein also requested that the company expedite the approximately 1,000 other outstanding light orders around town.
In addition, the Township will be upgrading the pedestrian crossing signage in the area, and will put out their sign board to alert pedestrians about the dangers of crossing in middle of the road.
In attendance, were representatives from JCP&L, the Mayor’s Office, Lakewood Police Chief Greg Meyer, Captain Steve Allaire, and Traffic Safety’s Sergeant Frank Work and Patrolman Alex Guzman.

Why do we always wait until unfortunately a fatality occurs until we do something. Preventive measures should be taken across Lakewood especially where there is a large number of pedestrians walking or speeding cars.
Preaching to the choir! We live in a self involved society (and an overwhelming stream of cars crashing the same direction & time) and consequently, the only concern & reaction comes when it affects us and after the fact, most still never learn! Sad but true!

We need people who are dressed in all black to either stay off the streets after dark or put something reflective on!!
Maybe before jumping to conclusions, we need to find out what the person was wearing. Not everyone who ever got hit by a car a night was wearing all black. A family lost a member and the first thing people assume is they they were wearing all black just because it happened in Lakewood. Lets try to stop the profiling, Please.
My comment was a general comment toward anyone who walks in any area that a Automobile can drive “after dark” and not dress accordingly so a driver can see you. It’s called common sense, street smart and personal safety.

Also, maybe people might consider looking both ways before crossing busy streets at night wearing all black?

Jess- who specifically do you mean? If the Jewish people, they wear white shirts, not all in black. If the African-Americans, your comment is racist.
Also, why not suggest putting in lighting versus certain people staying off the street all night long!?
It is nearly impossible to see a person dressed in a black suit, with a black overcoat, this time of year, despite a white shirt, which is totally hidden. A reflector is the best solution. Your comment about African-Americans is itself racist!

I drive there every day and often encounter people trying to cross in middle of the street, and they also expect traffic to stop for them!

Light up White Rd in Jackson, it is so dark and dangerous
Many kids get home when dark and there are no sidewalks or lights.
Unfortunately this is not the first fatality or injury in that area. By day and night I notice people crossing in middle of the block even if the traffic light is nearby. Certainly lighting and reflectors are most important, but people must remember that it’s a very busy area and they must cross at the light. I have had to stop or slow down often in that area for people just crossing wherever they want and not even rushing across.
I drive down that road at least twice a day almost every day, and many times I have narrowly missed hitting someone many of the people who live in the apartment complex located there who cross the street to the stores there have little or any regard for the traffic laws and their own lives and the lives of those driving, on an almost daily basis they just walk into the street and expect everyone to stop, while a loss of life is always a tragedy, this practice must stop!! i highly recommend putting a cement barrier down the middle of the road and making a real crosswalk at the corner of mlk. Kudos to all our law enforcement and township officials for your swift response.

People tend to jump the cement barrier which is even more dangerous.
This is not the first fatal accident on Cedar Bridge. We lived there for almost a decade and it happened a few times before. Installing a traffic light was proposed before but for some reason only now they decide to do something…. disappointing on the part of lakewood township.
Such a law woudl be great. unfortunately, it’s no so easy. maybe it should be a question in an upcoming election!

(And yes, in addition to the lights, all poeple should wear reflectors at night – even with light-colored clothing, how much more so with darker colors. It just takes few seconds to put on.)
