Reb Meilich Biederman this week added a new detail to a story exclusively reported on TLS last month.
Rabbi Biederman says the Lakewood business-owner was saved from losing tens of thousands of dollars because the secretary noticed the email was addressed to her using her first name – something the boss never did.

Ok, anyone could have merely told over this story but it took a Rabbi Biderman to perfectly tzu-shelt the Ohr Hachsim and his holy words that one will be saved from swindlers in such exact instance. Lehefech, feminists will scream how it’s degrading to not address the females by first name.
Thank you so much whoever inserted English subtitles to the Yiddish. First Yiddish shiur I ever understood. Such subtitles should be made mandatory on every live or video recorded Yiddish shiur.
Does anyone know of a series of online Yiddish shiurim with English subtitles? I would love to learn Yiddish by watching them.

Fantastic Story. And, btw, that should be the rule in every office. I’m happy to say I go to many business offices and most people to NOT call their help by their first names. I also gotta say, the oines that do, it really sounds off. Not prust or anything, just, like, off – Creepy, almost.

I disagree about feminists; on the contrary, calling anyone by their title vs. their first name is an honor, not an affront.
If you see a police officer, you don’t say “Hi Mike!” (reading off his badge), you say “Good Morning Officer McDouglas!”.
You address President Trump vs. Donald.
And you address your staff members with a title to show the importance of their position vs. a personal friendship. That is the idea, they are not “Chani” to you but rather Mrs. So-and-so and your relationship is business/formal and not chummy.

My husband is in the service industry working in people’s homes all the time. He is makpid not to use his own first name when he speaks to women..for example , when he calls to set up the appt, he always says , “this is Mr. Horowitz..he used to use his first name, but that led ppl to automatically address him that way, so he stopped. It’s a small change that brought about a big difference and as a side point more professionalism and more respect. At the beginning ,maybe some people made fun, commented, or said he is sooo frum. In the workplace we need to be extra careful to put up gedarim. My husband is a big mentch, makes eye contact as much as necessary, and is respectful of all ppl. Feminism, shmenisism…as a woman I want real respect! Men putting up gedarim shows their own self respect as well as their respect for others and their values!
It’s definitely much less tznius to use an unatrua Mr. X or Mrs z on a daily basis to someone you work with all day.
It’s a mistake. By dafka making a thing out of it is less tznius in my experience.
