The Toms River Police Department ESU (SWAT) Team held a training session in Lakewood today, with the help of the Lakewood Police Department SWAT team and an Orthodox Jewish business owner.
The team used the property of Jack Klugmann of Lakewood-based Accurate Builders to simulate breach entries, a form of entry used by the SWAT team for drug raid, hostage situations and more, says Department Spokesman Ralph Stocco.
“Joint training such as this better prepares the officers for the real life situations,” says Stocco.
Stocco also thanked the Lakewood Police Department, as well as Mr. Klugmann for allowing them to use his property.
“We thank Mr. Klugmann for letting us use his building – we are pleased to partner with the Lakewood business owners and Lakewood Police Department to provide this training,” Stocco said.
Sergeant Chris Spagnuolo the Lakewood SRT (SWAT) head who helped coordinate the operation, also thanked Mr. Klugmann, saying “he’s very generous and gracious.”
Mr. Klugmann tells TLS he was glad to be able to assist, especially given the recent tensions between some in the two communities.
“We’re looking to promote unity,” Jack says, and thanked the Lakewood and Toms River Police Departments for their outstanding police work.
Stocco adds, “when communities work together, more can be accomplished. Cooperation among various agencies brings people together. We learn from each other.”
The approximately two hour training ended with a ‘bang’, when officers used an explosive device to bust open a door – another technique used to gain entry in various situations (watch video).
