VIDEO & PHOTOS: Over 1,500 Attend SCHI’s 19th Annual Dinner

schiVIDEO & PHOTOS: As a light coating of snow blanketed Lakewood on Sunday night, Oak Street was swarming with cars. The inclement weather did not stop over 1,500 people from coming out to attend SCHI’s eagerly anticipated annual dinner. Family members, staff members and guests filled Lake Terrace hall to show their support to the incredible mossad, SCHI. As the cold weather raged outside, an atmosphere of warmth and camaraderie filled the hall.

The dinner helped raise much needed funds for the SCHI overnight summer camp. SCHI provides a special camp experience for boys located on the scenic grounds of Camp Bonim. SCHI’s overnight summer program helps students maintain the skills learned all year while providing the fun and energizing experience of summer camp. At the same time, it gives parents of special needs children a much needed respite and opportunity to focus on their families.

The evening began with an elegant reception in which participants milled around enjoying the good food, good company, and most of all, the atmosphere of unity and support which permeated Lake Terrace Hall. The dinner began promptly at 6:45, and the tables filled with SCHI family, staff and supporters. The program began with remarks by R’ Menashe Frankel, dinner chairmen, who spoke about the tremendous efforts of Rabbi Osher Eisemann, the founder and leader of SCHI. With great siyata dishmaya, Rabbi Eisemann opened SCHI for a handful of special children and continues to run the school which has now grown to over 200 children and adults. R’ Brody, a parent in SCHI joined him in expressing his tremendous gratitude and appreciation to SCHI and presented awards to various guests. Mr. Moshe Schwartzblatt spoke movingly about the incredible work SCHI does. All the speakers concurred that simply walking down the hallways of SCHI one day is inspiration alone.

The evening’s awards were presented amidst rousing applause. The Guests of Honor were Mr. and Mrs. Avrumi Weiss. Rabbi and Mrs. Shimon Munk were presented with the Avodas Hakodesh Award, and Mr. and Mrs. Baruch Framovitz with the Kesser Shem Tov Award. The moving words of the honorees touched the hearts of all those present, and left them with a beautiful picture of the incredible work SCHI does each day. The Man of the Year Award was presented to Senator Joseph F. Vitale.

The crowd was treated to a special performance by three students in SCHI. A SCHI student played the electric drums to the rousing applause of the audience. Another student sang “Siyu Shearim” beautifully, his sweet voice mingling with the rhythmic drumming of his friend. The wide smiles on the faces of the students as they took their bows was testimony to the efforts SCHI puts in to bring out the hidden strengths and talents of their students.

As guests enjoyed the gourmet dinner by Greenwald Caterers, they were treated to musical accompaniment by the melodious voice of Issac Honig. When the program began, all eyes were riveted to the screen as an exclusive video by Kol Rom Multimedia portrayed scenes from around SCHI. The feature video presentation focused on Camp SCHI, depicting magical scenes from the summer program. As guests watched the special campers participate in lively camp activities, concerts and trips, it was evident that this was no ordinary camp. Awards were presented to several of the counselors of Camp SCHI who put their heart and soul into providing their campers with the summer of a lifetime.

The dinner ended promptly at 9:00 PM. As the dinner guests returned home uplifted and fulfilled they knew that although the dinner was over, the inspiration would not leave them for a very long time. For the mission statement of SCHI that permeated the hall now resonates through the hearts of so many: the commitment to provide our special children with an education of love.

The SCHI School campaign this year was advertised all over as “Educating with Love” With all the camp hack we should brand it “Camping with Love”
