After years of lobbying, the new Lakewood Shuttle service has finally come to fruition.
Elected officials and dignitaries gathered this morning in Westgate to ride the new bus, which will be running a route from the west side of town.
The shuttle service came to being through the offices of Congressman Chris Smith and the initiative of senior staff at Beth Medrash Govoha (BMG), said Steven Reinman, the director of economic development. The Lakewood Township received a federal grant of one million dollars to purchase nine buses to be used for public transportation, Reinman said.
The Lakewood Shuttle, called the “L”, will be starting regular service Tuesday, March 17, Monday through Friday, and Sunday. A one-way trip is $1.00; children 5 and under are free. Exact change is required.
The L is available for everyone in the community to ride. Service animals and persons with portable oxygen tanks are permitted to ride the bus.
Upon request and with an advance notice of 48 business hours, routes may deviate daily up to a two-block radius for a fee of $2.00 each way. This service, however, is free for seniors and individuals with disabilities.
The service will pick up the Job Link route that had been suspended, as well as a new loop route from Westgate to the downtown area. (See routes here and here).

Why no service on Saturday?
No one wants to respond to the question why is there no Saturday service? There are people who do need transportation on Saturdays, it is a busy day for many people!
