VIDEO: A new volunteer firefighter in Lakewood put out his first fire as a firefighter last night – using Gatorade.
The fire department was called by a patrolling LCSW to the area of the Wawa on County Line Road late last night after a fire broke out in a nearby storm drain.
One of the new Lakewood firefighters passing the area was notified about the fire, and used Gatorade, some Dr. Pepper and some water he found in his car to douse the flames. The fire rekindled just prior to the fire truck’s arrival.
Fire officials warned that the fire likely started from a discarded cigarette butt, which set the leaves in the drain on fire.

Wow! That was quick thinking on the part of this firefighter. I know I speak for many when I say thank you for coming on board and being a part of this great department. Every one of you are greatly appreciated for what you do. And being that we don’t see firefighters on the job as much as we see our police officers thank G-d but we need to remind ourselves how much you all mean to us, just knowing that when that call goes out you all drop everything and anything to help out the people of this town. So thank you and congratulations!!
So proud of you Leiby!!!
Lakewood is surely safer with you on board! You’re quick thinking, and fast acting are a true virtue!!!

Is it bothering anyone if it burns down there? It is self contained.
