A memorial event was held yesterday at Lakehurst, remembering the Hindenburg disaster.
On May 6, 1937, the Hindenburg Airship killed 36 crewmen and passengers when it crashed in Lakehurst, NJ, at the end of the first North American transatlantic journey. The ship was flying for just 14 months when the tragedy occurred.
On board were 97 people (36 passengers and 61 crewmen); there were 36 fatalities (13 passengers, 22 crewmen, and 1 worker on the ground).
The ceremony included a ringing of the bell for each of the deceased, and the event took place precisely at 7:25 PM, the time the crash occurred. Each branch of service – Air Force, Army, Navy, Marines and Coast Guard, lead wreaths in honor and memory of the deceased.
Lakewood Township Committeeman and Air Force reservist was among those in attendance.
At the time, the Hindenberg was considered a world wonder.
