VIDEO: Has The Influx of So Many Needy People Caused Many To Stop Fulfilling Mitzvas Tzedakah The Way It Should Be? | Rabbi Moshe Rotberg

Is it possible that despite the enormous amounts of Tzedakos being distributed, it is harder than ever for the most needy amongst us to be helped?

Does anyone know if this applies to the collectors for Mosdos, Kollelim, and all the various causes? I feel like the people collecting in shul and door to door are NOT actual aniyim. DO these halachos apply to that as well? There are so many worthy Tzedakkos, but it seems that the overwhelming majority of these halachos apply to genuine aniyim.

Thank you for the Shiur.
Recently someone came around collecting. The man said that his father is not well and his father has no money for food for his siblings.
The big question is, he had no current letter from a Rav that knows him. He was carrying a letter that was given to his father about 6 months ago. The letter expired. The Rabbonim in Lakewood gave the father permission to collect for a few weeks, I do not recall the exact amount of time.
The son is now collecting for his father and family, but the son has no letter. How do we know for sure that your money is going to Tzadaka????
If you are giving a few dollars okay, but to give $25, $50, $75, where is the money going???
Which Rav is saying that I know this person and he is an

Take everything with agrain of salt. כבדהו ואחשדהו . עניי עירך קודמים. So give with a Cheshbon maybe he needs it desperately and maybe he has other means. If you can afford it then give what you can. if not don’t give. Many of them make weddings through collecting and it’s saving them. and many are who knows what. And many go to other towns out of state too. So אלץ מיט א חשון.

After listening to the Drasha, it seems Rabbi Rotberg is speaking to people that can afford giving. But if you can’t afford don’t be embarrassed just either give a quarter or say sorry I don’t have.

The biggest problem I have is that I had to deal with people who were clearly unbalanced and they really took advantage, creating very inappropriate situations at our home. Not sure how to deal with that. Also the drivers brining in nine or ten at a time several times a week can be quite overwhelming. Would love practical and halachic guidance.

I feel the same way. There are undeniably serious mental health issues. And they come in with copies of checks you wrote to them the year before (or even months before) or even to others and DEMAND the same amount again. The drivers ruin it for everybody. It is just terrible that they steal around fifty percent from the poor (and those who give the poor tzedaka). Just unacceptable. I do not give money to people with drivers.

In NY many have gabbaim in Eretz Yisroel who distribute the funds for them there. They have every person who comes to their home fill out a form with their information. When the Baal Habaas finishes talking to them, he gives them the information where to collect the funds in eretz Yisroel. He faxes the forms over to the gabbai, with a dollar amount. The gabbai also is sometimes involved in investigating if the people are legit as well. The drivers who bring the people, charge roughly 30% of all intake. So if he brings several people and each one gets $100, he gets a few hundred from that single stop. If the driver is in that much need, he should go in himself and ask for help. If these peopel are struggling that much and coming here to pay for their basic needs, they shouldn’t be paying so much for a driver.
