  1. People who drive down that route on daily bases will not notice that stop sign because you know the road in “your sleep”. From the video it looked that only 2 cars had stopped.

  2. I think it might be a smart idea to paint the word ‘STOP’ and paint the ‘limit line’.

Otherwise, how is a driver supposed to see the stop sign 5 feet after a parked car??

  3. maybe because there is a minivan parked all the way to the stop sign… which as per NJ law can’t park within 50 ft of stop sign. The new stop sign is barely noticeable.

  4. I thought that multiple-way stop signs are supposed to have flashing lights, especially the newer ones, so people notice the new traffic pattern. There were no flashing lights noticeable in the videos. If they were there, they are not noticeable enough!

You’ll remember that when the 4-way stop was first installed on the corner of 7th and Monmouth Ave, there were additional signs in advance of the intersection as well, and something in the middle as well, to get drivers to see the change.

I also agree with Focus on Safety that clearly delineated white cross-walk lines will be helpful. Hopefully drivers will be aware that the LAW is to stop for pedestrians waiting in the crosswalk.

Also there needs to be a way to keep cars (and especially minivans) from parking too close to the intersection. Yellow curbs, signs reading No Parking from Here to Corner that list the fine, and actually following thru with some ticketing, would help to make people take the change seriously.

I am very happy to see the efforts being made around town to improve safety. Kudos to the Mayor and all those involved!

  5. Another idea to help people realize that there is a stop sign, is for them to get off their phones and start paying attention to the roads and the road signs. Doing so greatly decreases the chances of accidents and prevents many cases of chillul Hashem.

  6. They can’t put stop signs in buckets in the middle of a street that is barely wide enough to drive through; where parked cars eat up 1/3 of the little space there is, especially when they park so close to the stop sign.
    Blinking lights are more practical.

  7. Maybe look up instead of in your phones. ?? A lot of Lakewood drivers just drive through already existing stop signs and beep as if the person with right of way is wrong.

  8. Wow, scary video…looks like more than 1 accident was avoided at the last minute. That new stop sign needs to be more prominently displayed. As some others mentioned, flashing lights on the sign & white striping on the ground to indicate the stop sign is there would def help alert drivers.

  9. Drivers should be paying attention to their surroundings, even with long established stop signs people routinely drive through them, I have even heard people say if there is no one else at a 4 way stop you don’t have to stop…
