VIDEO: Committeeman Lichtenstien Reaffirms Township’s Stance on Tent City During Reorganization Meeting

VIDEO: Committeeman Meir Lichtenstein, who has stood at the forefront of bringing resolve to the pressing Tent City issue, used his acceptance speech at the Township’s Reorganization meting yesterday to reaffirm his and the Committee’s stance on the homeless camp.

Lichtenstein said the encampment is continuing to grow into a danger for its residents, surrounding areas and first responders.

But the Committeeman said he will work with the County, the Mayor and other Committeemen, to expedite the resolve of the issue.

Among other issues, the newly-elected Committeeman promised to work with the Mayor on Downtown issues, continue – as the liaison of the Emergency Department – to work to improve Emergency response, and continue to improve the relationship between the LPD and the citizens of Lakewood.

  1. No big deal if I have to move back home ill do it right now life is great here, its like camping out all year and once again thanks to (moderated) from Arlington who let’s me use wi-fi

  2. Thank you to the kindhearted Judge who allowed us to stay. We need free wifi installed so I dont have to keep going to the Public Library and I could surf from the comfort of my tent.

  3. Thank you kind people for everything . We are happy here just wondering if i can open a small store and be exemt from taxes etc… almost like an India reservation as we arent part of Lakwood or NJ ..
    We are TENT CITY …..

PS . hope we can start getting mail delivery soon

  4. #3: “How about building them a Shelter? That would solve the problem.”

and what problem will it solve? the will still fight, steal, pillage, and consume intoxicants(alcohol or drugs). they still will cause the issues they have now: stabbings, theft, etc.

HOW ABOUT THE DRUNKS, FELONS, CRIMINALS, DRUG USERS ACCEPT WHAT IS OFFERED FOR THE THE LAST 2 YEARS? (free hotels, job placement, mental health services, etc)

But they wont accept all the help, because it means leaving their intoxicants behind. So what do you expect, for our tax dollars to build them a place to live while allowing them to do drugs and drink? Do you realize the slum that it will become in less than 6months??? IF THEY REFUSE TO LEAVE THEIR INTOXICANTS NOW, WHAT MAKES YOU THINK HAVING A LEGIT BUILDING WILL STOP THEM?

Side Note: can liberals not think past the surface? do they not have 3-dimensional minds? my god, their life is so simple.

  5. #1, #4, & #5- How about instead of pretending to be Tent City residents, you actually go out there and meet some of them? A majority of them are the nicest, most considerate group of people you will ever meet. Always with a smile on their faces and a positive attitude, regardless of the hate that is focused on them. They live day by day just to survive and still never complain. By pretending to be a resident from there just to write the most outlandish comments, you do not shame them or mock them- just yourself and show how very small of a person you truly are. I will pray for you.

  6. Mr. Conservative – First of all, I’m Not a lib in any way. I am conservative, but I’m a Jew first. And a Jew has the Middah of mercy.

“and what problem will it solve? the will still fight, steal, pillage, and consume intoxicants(alcohol or drugs). they still will cause the issues they have now: stabbings, theft, etc.”

This is your bias speaking. If you look in just one other city -NYC -when they put these people in Shelters -most of these criminal activities decreased tremendously.
Taking or abusing substances occurs all over Lakewood and the US, not just in Tent city. Unfortunately the federal & state govs. have never properly dealt with these issues. As far as crime over there – the same thing -it’s all over the place. If you see criminal activity in Tent City notify the police. And don’t tell me they don’t go in there because the L. Scoop has plenty of pics of them responding there!

  7. #9 TRUTH:

    1. “If you look in just one other city -NYC -when they put these people in Shelters -most of these criminal activities decreased tremendously.” = FALSE
    – simply google: “nyc shelter crimes” and you will see this:
“Eighty Crime-Ridden NYC Housing Projects to Get Security Cameras” & “Violence rises in New York City’s housing developments, statistics show” from reputable newspapers and websites that report exactly what i had stated before. NewYorkDailynews wrote: “Violence in city housing developments spiked last year, led by a sharp increase in Bronx murders and Harlem shootings, statistics show.”
all these “housing projects” are nothing more than state subsidized apartments, and transitional housing for the homeless who qualify.

    2. “Taking or abusing substances occurs all over Lakewood and the US” = BLANKET STATEMENT.
-What does that have to do with those who abuse drugs, having to be housed by tax dollars? i could careless who consumes what intoxicants, as long as they dont sit around and do so while i have to pay for their housing. and obviously the state thinks like do, otherwise they wouldnt mandate that shelter residents give up drugs & alcohol or risk being evicted.

    3. “the same thing -it’s all over the place.” = BLANKET STATEMENT.
-again, what does what private citizens do, versus those that live in shelters? if you want get drunk, do drugs, and do stupid things all within your own home- go for it. i dont care since i dont support you. but when i have to pay taxes; and then see a group of people who dont have to follow the morals and values of normal people= it makes me apprehensive to want to further support them.

    4. ” If you see criminal activity in Tent City notify the police. And don’t tell me they don’t go in there because the L. Scoop has plenty of pics of them responding there!” = WORTHLESS STATEMENT.
-i never LPD dont respond there. idk why you even brought this up.

  8. so are you bleeding heart liberals advocating for homeless shelters that allow alcohol/drugs? if you are not advocating for such (alcohol/drug friendly) shelters, then you are blind to the fact that the homeless will not go to these shelters because they refuse to leave their drugs and alcohol behind.

so we will end up building a homeless shelter that will stand empty. why cant the bleeding-heart left see this?

  9. May HaShem bless all of the elected township officials that they are matzliach in all their leadership capacities to create an exceptionally good ‘avirah’ of achdus and shalom in all ‘in-ya-nim.”

May HaShem give you ei-tzah tovah to bring resolution to the ‘ir-hamiklat” and may we soon be elevated to “kiryat Lakewood” in the holy city of Yerushalayim , bim-hay-rah vi-ya-me-nu!

  10. 11.Mr. Conservative says:
“if you are not advocating for such (alcohol/drug friendly) shelters, then you are blind to the fact that the homeless will not go to these shelters because they refuse to leave their drugs and alcohol behind.
so we will end up building a homeless shelter that will stand empty. why cant the bleeding-heart left see this?”

Once they have a normal place to live – they will go willingly there – like in NYC. Also, once they have a shelter – the Judge will allow the eviction of Tent city. Why can’t the stone-hearted posters see this?
Lakewood is Not the first town/city in the US to have homeless -you can learn from other places.

  11. I hope you read this. If I were you I would fence in the area to.prevent more from coming in.
Then I would place a security trailer at the entrance. Each tent city would b required to show county ID before entry. Each member would have a guidance counselor sit with them and cone up with a plan of action before they move out, shelter, relatives, deport to mexico, treatment center, mental health facility, habitat for humanity, jail for fugatives of the law etc. I wish I was Mayor, this would’ve been over a long time ago.

  12. #14 Truth: “Once they have a normal place to live – they will go willingly there – like in NYC.”

(moderated) the ones who refused to give up alcohol or drugs (as the rules stated) refused to go. JUST LIKE THEY REFUSED OCEAN COUNTY’S FREE HOTEL STAYS!!!!!!!!

“Also, once they have a shelter – the Judge will allow the eviction of Tent city.” – THEY HAD SHELTER THAT THE COUNTY WAS OFFERING. SOME WENT, THE ONES WHO REFUSED TO GIVE UP ALCOHOL OR DRUGS = STAYED!!!!
