[COMMUNICATED] VIDEO: Yizty walked into Yeshiva one morning to find his chavrusa talking to another member of his kollel. They were complaining about how tired they were, having been kept up all night by their babies. Yizty stared at them in silence, and finally could not contain himself. “I wish I was tired from being kept up all night by my child!”
At the time, Yizty was married for a while and was not yet blessed with children.
Rivka was the oldest in her family. When she got married, she was looking forward to being the mother of her parent’s first grandchild. She was destined to be the first one to name a child after one of her beloved grandparents. But, after a few years of childlessness, her younger sister had a baby boy before her. Though Rivka was very happy with for her sister and immediately formed a strong love for her nephew, inside she was broken. At the Shalom Zachor, she couldn’t take it anymore and left the dining room and went to the bedroom where the baby was sleeping and broke down in tears. She said to her sleeping nephew, “I’m so sorry, I know this is not your fault. I love you. It’s just not the way I expected things to turn out.
Current statistics indicate that one out of every six couples are faced with issues of childlessness. That means that each one of us knows someone, be it a friend, neighbor, sibling, cousin etc. who has used the services of Bonei Olam. Of course, we probably do not know who because Bonei Olam maintains the utmost respect for the privacy of those who seek their help. To date, over 5,262 children have been brought into the world through the litany of resources provided by Bonei Olam.
“My wife and I were married six years before having children,” Yitzy says. About three of four years into their marriage, he was advised by his rebbe in Eretz Yisroel to contact Bonei Olam for help. Medication was necessary according to their doctor, but the young kollel couple was unable to afford the astronomical costs.
“It was then that Bonei Olam paid for the medication necessary and we were so grateful,” he said.
Bonei Olam is the only organization that helps with the financial burdens and tries to cover the costs of testing and treatments. It can cost anywhere from $18,000 to $20,000 for a full IVF treatment and other treatments begin at $40,000 and upwards. The biggest impediment to seeking help he says is financially based. The only reason some couples don’t have kids is because they don’t have money. How can we let money stand in the way of our friends having children?
Just last week a local couple had an appointment with a big doctor in New York. The doctor had trouble with the insurance and told the couple they cannot come in for their appointment that is in two days. One call to Bonei Olam, and they told the doctor’s office that they are working with the insurance company and in the interim, they can bill Bonei Olam and then we will work it out with the insurance company. Many times people think their insurance company will take care of these treatments and they don’t. It is then that we intervene and have our people fight for them.”
In our fast growing community, Bonei Olam is struggling every day to keep up with the demands for funding and resources. There is no greater mitzvah we can do than to help Bonei Olam continue their great work by donating now.
THIS TUESDAY, 2.17.15 in Lake Terrace Hall, Bonei Olam will be holding their bi-Annual Lakewood Dinner.

We have been married for 17+ years and have not yet been blessed with children. Contrary to the depiction in this video, childless couples are not pathetic masochists who chose to inflict unecessary pain and anguish upon themselves. Why would a childless man choose to torture himself by going to Avos U’ Bonim and then cry at his shtender, looking at all the fathers learning with their sons? We don’t walk around the streets looking forlorn and depressed, staring at everyone else’s children with pain and envy. We know that we will have the children that the Aibeshter wants us to have. We are genuinely happy for everyone else who has not been tested with this nisayon. I personally found this video to be extremely insulting.
