Vermont Avenue in Lakewood Expected to Open Early Spring

The following is an ‘Ask The Mayor’ question submitted to TLS, and the Mayor’s response. Email your questions for the Mayor to [email protected].

Question:

Mr. Mayor,

I appreciate this segment and the fact that it provides access for anybody to be able to reach out to government.

I just wanted to ask about two minor issues:

1) at the corner of Vine Ave and Oak Street going down Vine northbound the light seems to be a bit short (sometimes as few as three or four cars can make it through the intersection on one light) is there anything that can be done about this? Or would prioritizing Vine Avenue make the traffic on Oak much worse?

2) I was excited to hear that they will be opening up Vermont from Route 70 going through. I was just wondering, why the phase from 70 to Chestnut hasn’t been opened yet in spite of the fact that it looks to be fully paved.

Response from Mayor Coles:

Good afternoon,

I will ask our engineers to study the timing on those lights and see if we can adjust the timing to make them more efficient.

Regarding Vermont, we are waiting for the sate to finalize the approval of the ramp by the Wawa to Rt 70. Right now it is a one way and there is concern that having two way traffic in both directions would cause accidents. We are hoping to get the finial OK by early spring and then get the work done to make it a 2 way street.

Take Care

Ray

  1. Just a clarification regarding your headline…

Mayor Coles said that the Township expects to receive DOT approval for the Wawa stub work in early spring. This approval will allow the Township to solicit bids for the construction and then to begin construction.

It takes approximately 3 months from when they begin soliciting bids until they can actually begin road work, so in the very best case scenario, road work will begin in June or July.

DOT will permit the road to be open only once the Route 70 intersection improvements are complete.

So, your headline deserves some correcting.
