Vehicle goes up in flames after being parked on pile of leaves

lfd-tlsA vehicle went up in flames today in Lakewood after it was parked on a pile of leaves, officials say.

This specific condition occurs from the result of the hot exhaust system components coming in contact with the fallen, dry leaves. Specifically, the catalytic converter is the cause.

The converter can reach up to 1,000 degrees, and though covered, the cover can reach ignitable temperatures.

  1. Everyone please take note not to park on leaves…… As I am writing this there is a car parked on the leaves right outside my house…..

  2. The leaf collection is a DISGRACE. No other way to say it. They are collecting leaves the same way they were collecting leaves 25 years ago. It is no secret that there are way too many cars in town and no where to park them. So does it make any sense to anyone that for 6-8 weeks so many parking spots are taken up by piles of leaves? Near your house. Near your Shul. It’s ridiculous. A system like the old shtetl from 100 years ago. If Public Works can not handle it (which they clearly can not), hire an outside company to come in here and vacuum up and mulch the leaves of the entire Township in a few days. This leaf collection is almost as ridiculous as their street sweeping operation that passes the front of your house twice a year and always just on the day that you parked the car in front of your house and you’re not home. Maybe add another sweeper or two? Maybe have a schedule and LET residents KNOW when the annual sweeping days are? This is a real city now! Brooklyn streets get swept twice a WEEK! We get twice a year if you are lucky. So yeah, of course don’t park on dry leaves. But where are you supposed to park for two months if your entire street curbs are taken up by piles of leaves that have been raked to the curb a month ago?? It’s so frustrating. As far as I know we look to Public Works for 3 things. Street Cleaning, Leaf Collection and Snow Removal. Strike one. Strike two. Strike three. And there might be ways to improve Garbage Collection too. Can you please see to it that someone in Public Works or the Township sees this? I’d love to hear some sort of reply. Thank you.

  3. They did do leaf pick up in November. Dont wait to do your leaves in December. My neighbor just did theirs yesterday. Call and find out in Oct what days they are doing leaf pick up and do your leaves prior. Duh Blaming others when they did their job and you did not do yours. Not cool.

  4. To Ray…This is Lakewood New Jersey. Not Vermont. Not New Hampshire. And not even New York. Most of the leaves come down here toward the middle and end of November. Picking up our leaves on November 3 is useless. Three quarters of the leaves are still on the trees.

  5. Ray…I’m going glad they picked up your leaves before Thanksgiving. So..you either live just in the perfect place where they actually pick up leaves or you are related to someone at Public Works! The rest of this town has mountains of leaves all over the place. Maybe You should stop trying to excuse the inexcusable incompetence of our Public Works Department. I can’t wait to see what you say when you are snowed in for three days because PW did not know it would snow in the Winter.

  6. 15. No not related to anyone in this town. I grew up in Pa so snow is no issue. I learned how to drive on unplowed roads so I won’t be crying then either. You all complain too much around here. Take the pity party somewhere else.
