As parents and caregivers fill out a multitude of forms at the start of the school year, they may have questions about some requirements, including the vaccine schedule.
According to Marion Gruber, Ph.D., director of the Office of Vaccines Research and Review at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), vaccines are integral to get children off to a healthy start.
“Parents should know that vaccines protect children from many serious illnesses from infectious diseases. The risk of being harmed by vaccines is much smaller than the risk of serious illness from infectious diseases,” she says.
Gruber emphasizes that most side effects of vaccines are usually minor and short-lived. For example, a child may feel soreness at the injection site or experience a mild fever. Serious vaccine reactions are extremely rare, but they can happen.
FDA’s online resource, Vaccines for Children, A Guide for Parents and Caregivers, describes in more detail the types of routinely administered vaccines available for children, and answers many of the questions posed by parents and caregivers.
Reducing Childhood Disease
Vaccines have contributed to a significant reduction in many childhood infectious diseases, such as diphtheria, measles, and Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib). Some infectious diseases, such as polio and smallpox, have been eliminated in the United States because of vaccines. It is now relatively rare for American children to experience the devastating and often deadly effects of diseases that can be prevented by vaccines.
Because immunization programs of the 20th century were so successful, many of today’s parents have never seen many vaccine-preventable diseases and do not understand that the diseases could actually reemerge. If individuals choose not to vaccinate themselves or their children, some diseases that are now rare or nonexistent in this country may resurface, Gruber says.
Steps to Take When Your Child Is Vaccinated
Review the vaccine information sheets
These sheets explain both the benefits and risks of a vaccine. Healthcare professionals are required by law to provide them.
Talk to your healthcare professional about the benefits and risks of vaccines.
Learn the facts about the benefits and risks of vaccines, along with the potential consequences of not vaccinating against diseases. Some parents and caregivers are surprised to learn that children can be harmed or die of measles, diphtheria, pertussis, and other vaccine-preventable diseases.
Before vaccination, inform your healthcare professional of these conditions.
This might include being sick or having a history of certain allergic or other adverse reactions to previous vaccinations or their components. For example, eggs are used to produce many influenza (flu) vaccines; therefore, it is important to inform your healthcare professional if your child is severely allergic to eggs.
The packaging of some vaccines that are supplied in vials or prefilled syringes may contain natural rubber latex, which may cause allergic reactions in latex-sensitive individuals. Let your healthcare professional know about an allergy to latex. It is also extremely important to discuss with your healthcare professional which vaccines should or should not be given to children who have a weakened immune system.
Report adverse reactions
Adverse reactions and other problems related to vaccines should be reported to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System, which is maintained by FDA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). For a copy of the vaccine reporting form, call 1-800-822-7967, or report online to www.vaers.hhs.gov

Vaccine adverse reactions are more common than the medical community is letting on. They are NOT rare and range from fever, rash at sight on injection, brain inflammation (common after the MMR), seizures (very common), SIDS, allergies, guillian barre syndrom (paralysis), asthma etc. The list goes on and on.
We are the highest vaccinated country in the WORLD and we have the highest rate of SIDS from all developed countries. 70% of SIDS cases occur within three weeks after the DTaP vaccine. Coincidence? Your uninformed doctor may say so. But it is up to us parents to do our research. In this world where the Truth is being kept from us, where the pharmaceutical industry is America’s largest lobbyist industry and media supporter, we need to do the research ourselves. We need to find out the truth about vaccines and how it is literally damaging our children on a daily basis. Start by reading the package inserts- that small paper that comes in the vaccine package. Look up each ingredient and how it affects the human body. Read the list of adverse reactions. Then decide whether the benefits outweigh the risks.
Considering that SIDS is most common before age 6 months it would hardly be surprising that 70% of SIDS happen within 3 weeks of getting a shot that they give at 2,4, and 6 months.
I’m not sure citing that correlation qualifies as truth.
Yes I vaccinate my children, but I have listened to the anti-vax movement with an open mind. When you connect statistics like this, you deny yourselves credibility.
Please tell me what the statistics for survival are in those countries that don’t vaccinate when a baby contracts pertussis (covered by DTAP). Please tell me what happens when an infant is exposed to pertussis. Please tell me what the chances are of a child surviving that vs. surviving a Dtap shot.
Probably 99% of children who receive the Dtap vaccine survive without serious lasting damage. Infants who catch pertussis can’t say the same to put it mildly.
Forget Pertusis, what about tetanus? Doesn’t it matter that if your 4 year old scrapes himself on a swingset, you don’t have to worry about blood poisoning because of this shot. Your seven year old is protected as well. What % of little boys encounter rusty nails at some point?
Do what you want, but don’t impugn the entire medical field, many fine ehrliche doctors included, in order to justify that decision.
Interesting that you bring up pertussis, which in my opinion has been the largest vaccine failure in medical history. In a failed attempt to explain away why vaccinated individuals seem to be the
only ones contracting and spreading whooping cough during major outbreaks, the FDA ended up discovering that the vaccine for whooping cough(pertussis), spreads the very same pathogenic bacteria that causes whopping cough in the first place, which in some people can lead to serious infections. As published in Proceedings Of The National Academy of Sciences, “[A]cellular pertussis vaccines licensed by the FDA are effective in preventing the disease among those vaccinated, but… they may not prevent infection from the bacteria that causes whooping cough in those vaccinated or its spread to other people, including those who may not be vaccinated.”
In other words, anyone who gets this vaccine is at risk of spreading pertussis to others. We saw this clearly in 2010. When 3 pertussis boosters wasn’t enough to stop the spread of whooping cough, they added a 4th booster to the already cramped vaccine childhood schedule. That year saw a record outbreak of pertussis which we haven’t seen in over 60 years.
As for tetanus, there has been cases in which vaccinated people with high levels of antibodies still contracted tetanus. If your child does cut himself with a rusty nail, let it bleed out. Good wound hygiene is key to preventing tetanus. Tetanus can only survive in an anaerobic environment. Once it is exposed to oxygen (bleeding is a sign of oxygen) tetanus cannot survive. Vaccinated people can actually be at a disadvantage because they will not be as careful to take care of their wounds and practice good wound hygiene. Let it bleed out a bit and clean with fresh water. I have done my research as well. I have been researching vaccines for 5 years and have come to the conclusion that vaccines are not safe, are not protective and is not effective. Especially since I have personally witness family members suffer from vaccine injury. Once you vaccinate, there is no going back. Many injuries are irreversible and cause a lifetime of suffering. I don’t wish that on anyone.
Mississippi is the highest vax rate in USA , & the highest infant mortality
coincidence????
USA more vaccines in than anywhere, highest infant death rate of any developed nation, coincidence????
Harvard med school says mumps protects from ovarian cancer
1% of American women die of ovarian cancer CDC,
So you really think that’s a worthwhile exchange ?????
Your erliche MD makes a mint from vaccines. torah says bribes work!!!
Oy vey I forget to take the chicken pox vaccine, call chevrah kadishe ASAP
To healthy….. “Your uninformed doctor may say so” “But it is up to us parents to do our research” How arrogant and naive could you be, to sit on Google for a few days and do research and call your doctor who went to school for years uniformed. All I want is for you to have a sit down with your grandparents and ask them about all the people that died so young from all these illnesses that vaccines prevent. Humans BS’D are living longer and better then ever and all you could do is spit at all the doctors instead of spending your time thanking Hashem for sending us these miracle cures
There are two sides to the vaccine debate. Many diseases were already in decline prior to widespread vaccine programs. (The statistics are available). But I would like to mention something being that this is being presented in a frum forum. The gardisol vaccine is supposed to prevent HPV. Please, B’chol Loshon Shel Bakasha, this vaccine is unnecessary in our young girls. There have been many devastating reactions to this vaccine. Please don’t expose your precious children to this vaccine even if it might be part of the routine. Furthermore, this past year the flu vaccine was less than 25% effective. The strain of flu for 2016 is obviously not yet known, yet the vaccine is probably available already. Why expose ourselves and children to a vaccine which in great likelihood will again miss its target? Let’s keep ourselves healthy by eating healthfully, washing our hands, and taking extra vitamins when not feeling well.
To number 1:
The correlation you cite between SIDS occurring within three weeks of the DTaP is utter nonsense.
As the second commenter stated, you can’t simply connect these datum arbitrarily.
Of course most SIDS cases are going to occur within three weeks of the vaccine, the vaccines are given throughout the first 6 months- exactly when SIDS is most likely to occur.
Without stating any shred of proof- which unless your a researcher you cannot even gather- you’ve put the cart in front of the horse by deciding one caused the other. Correlation does not equal causation!
I’ll bet most infant choking cases also occurs within 3 weeks of receiving vaccines…. Probably car accidents too? Gasp!!!
To #6
You say we are living longer due to vax
The oldest vax used today is polio 60 years old ,
Whom is your quack MD trying to fool , that people are living to 90 because their kids or grand-kids got vaxed ???
Maybe DR Quack should vax the dead to protect their kids ???
Not even my 95 year old granny buys that myth!!!
There was a pertussis outbreak, that is true. and all the more reason why your infant must be vaccinated. Pertussis is not dangerous for healthy 20 year olds (the vast majority of cases in that outbreak) It is potentially fatal for babies. That is why it is one of the first vaccines they get. I don’t see how you made a better point there.
My own child limps for 3 days every time he gets a shot. It is scary. But its not deadly.
Also to your point about the doctors making a fortune on vaccines. That is simply not true in Lakewood, NJ. NJ has the lowest insurance reimbursement rates in the country and with the number of times we take our kids to the doctor, they do not make money on the babies at all.
How do I know? Instead of researching online, I asked my ehrliche doctor all these questions. and he answered me, patiently one by one. He wasn’t the angry ogre that people said all doctors are.
Although he would have a right to be, you just called him uninformed and crooked.
Wow Unbelievable #9 You have absolutely no reading comprehension at all, you didn’t address even one of my points but maybe its because instead of trusting your teachers you did your own research.
You need to do more research then taking 2 arbitrary facts and deciding that one causes the other.
Further study into the infant mortality rate shows that the rate is only significantly higher for infants over a few months old – and it only differs in disadvantaged children – meaning those who dont have access to proper healthcare (maybe VACCINES????) and proper childcare providers.
I’m sure that people who are anti-vaccines have good arguments but at least do your research before pretending you are actually quoting a source.
And #3: If YOU did your research, you would find that the vaccine that the US gives (acellular) spreads to people but mostly actually causes illness in the NON vaccinated. So if people would vaccinate, there would be a lot less illnesses because the bacteria that remains in them the extra few weeks would not affect others.
to #10 healthy vax :
your own child limps for 3 days after shots and that doesnt scare you?!?!
what kind of parent are you?
if this is a physical reaction that you actually saw, then how can you not fear the internal reactions that you have no way of knowing about until chas veshalom something occurs??
i absolutely dont agree. sorry, my children are fine, bli ayin horah, and didnt get any extra unnecessary shots.
actually , my dr. says that the flu shot was totally totally not important and didnt even prevent flu, but my babysitter insisted. and so i had to get it for him. i bascally put my son thru unnecessary pain and discomfort for no reason at all. the doctors and PA’s were laughing that i was even doing it in the first place , as the season was over anyway…but this is lakewood. what can i do? i prob wont get my kids into schools if they didnt get the flu shot…if the babysitters are threataning to throw out…
