Chai Lifeline has issued an urgent notice this evening regarding the restricted access to CHOP due to the Pope’s visit to Philadelphia.
Due to road closures, there will be no access to CHOP from 10PM on Friday, September 25th, through 12PM on Monday, September 28th.
In fact, says Chai Lifeline, key staff at CHOP that aren’t in walking distance to the hospital will be remaining at the hospital over the weekend.
“In the event that your child needs emergency medical care during this time, please call Hatzolah or travel to your local hospital,” Rabbi Sruli Fried, Regional Director of Chai Lifeline stated to TLS. “There will be no access to CHOP for regular vehicles.”
In the meantime, Chai Lifeline is coordinating logistics for families that need to be at the hospital over Yom Tov.
“We at Chai Lifeline have been planning for months in anticipation of the Pope’s visit and the impact it will have on Chai Lifeline families access to CHOP,” says Rabbi Sruli Fried. “All food will be delivered and the Kosher pantry and the Chai House on Sansom Street be stocked with all Yom Tov necessities by Friday before the lockdown starts.”
Chai Lifeline is also working on getting as many families as possible discharged before Shabbos, as well as to try to get families out of the “zone” on Sunday.
“Volunteers will be in the hospital on Yom Tov to visit families who are staying in the hospital, but we strongly urge that no one should try to travel to CHOP from Friday night through the first days of Yom Tov as there will be no access to CHOP.”
Chai Lifeline has also once again constructed a unique Class A Fire Retardant Sukkah to meet the safety regulations at CHOP. Directions to the Sukkah as well as pertinent Z’manim for Yom Tov can be found inside the kosher pantry.

Thank you yosef Klein for heading out to chop tomorrow, you’re a true Tzadik!!!!!!!!
Thanx, R’ Sruli. A few yrs ago, I was stuck at Chop for Sukkos and Sruli himself came to put up our Sukkah. And, BTW, if ur stuck in Chop over Sukkos, daven at the Hillel House on Campus. It’s closer than the Chabad shul and a better chance of having 10 Shomrei Shabbos in ur Minyan.
How do you close a hospital let alone a major one like chop?
I don’t get it either. How can you shut down a hospital like that. The pope visit shouldn’t affect them. If he would need a hospital he won’t be going to chop either. Simply rediculous.
Well # 4, I dont believe the pope would go to CHOP any way….(“C” stands for Children)…
