Just hours after New Jersey issued fully funded November SNAP benefits in compliance with a lower court ruling, the U.S. Supreme Court has temporarily blocked that same order.
Late Friday night, Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson granted the Trump administration’s emergency appeal to pause a judge’s directive requiring the government to fully fund Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) payments during the ongoing federal government shutdown.
The administration argued it does not have sufficient funds in its contingency account to make the full payments, and requested permission to continue with partial SNAP disbursements until Congress restores funding.
Justice Jackson, who oversees emergency matters from Massachusetts, issued the order halting the lower court’s ruling until an appeals court determines whether to impose a longer suspension.
The pause leaves the status of upcoming SNAP benefits uncertain in several states, including New Jersey, where many recipients had already received full November payments earlier in the day.
Further updates will be posted as additional information becomes available.
