The man struck and killed by a vehicle early this morning in Lakewood, has been identified.
As first reported by TLS, just after midnight this morning, Officers were dispatched to the intersection of Rt. 9 and John Street after receiving a call that a pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle.
At approximately 12:27 am, responding officers learned that 58-year-old Frederick Gillette of Lakewood was struck by a 2003 GMC Yukon that was traveling northbound on Rt 9 while trying to cross the street in a motorized wheelchair.
As a result, Mr. Gillette suffered significant traumatic injuries resulting in his death. The driver of the Yukon, a 47-year-old Lakewood man, remained on scene and is working with officials.
The investigation is ongoing.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Officer Stephen Meyer with the Lakewood Police Department Traffic Safety Unit at 732-363-0200 ext. 5382

the state should have provided this handicapped resident with a home health aide to make sure he is safe and healthy it is a known fact that across the street there is a 24 hr convenience store that could have sold him a cold drink but there is no reason for an elderly person to have to go and ride by himself after midnight to the store to get a drink after a long hot day the state really needs to develop a plan for home care for those that need it just like other states provide for their own residents who do not have the means to provide care for and protect themselves
Why is the identity of the driver being withheld?
Because of idiots like yourself.
what purpose will be served by the public’s knowing the names of either the driver or the victim. the driver stayed at the scene. that is significant. otherwise, it is pure loshon horah
So sad. RIP Mr. Gillette.
