UPDATE: Lufthansa Airlines fined $4 million for Discriminating Against Jewish Passengers, Including Several Lakewood Residents

Today's record fine follows a DOT investigation began after Rep. Smith met with Lufthansa CEO and a Lakewood victim in his office

New Jersey Rep. Chris Smith (R-Manchester), who also is Co-Chair of the House Task Force for Combating Antisemitism, says the $4 million fine levied against Lufthansa today for discriminating against Jewish passengers several years ago—including some from Smith’s congressional district—“sends a strong message that discrimination and antisemitism has absolutely no place in our society and will not be tolerated.”

The record fine comes in response to a May 2022 incident when 128 members of the Orthodox Jewish community were denied boarding on a connecting flight in Germany based on the actions of only some of the passengers, even though many did not know each other and were traveling separately.

In the wake of the incident, Smith wrote a letter to Lufthansa Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Carsten Spohr expressing his “utter disgust” for the way in which the travelers were treated and requested a meeting with the German airline’s top brass to address “several vexing questions.”

At Smith’s request, the Lufthansa CEO met with him and a constituent in Smith’s DC office to hear directly from a victim of the discrimination just two weeks after the antisemitic incident. Lufthansa conducted an investigation, changed policies and continued negotiations with many of the passengers.

“The rising tide of antisemitism worldwide cannot be overlooked,” said Smith. “Tragically, Jewish men, women and children continue to suffer bias, cruelty, hate and violence simply because they are Jewish.”

“Silence is not an option—nor is inaction,” said Smith. “If our fight against this pernicious form of hatred is to succeed, we must be absolutely clear and bold in word, deed, policies and treatment.”

  1. Rep. Smith a a true friend to the Jews and his Lakewood constituents in particular. I know several people myself whom he has gone out of his way to assist. Specifically at a time when remaining loyal to Jews is less and less popular, we must express our gratitude for his standing up for us time and again. Thank you Mr. Smith for defining what a mensch is!!

  2. Biden Befuddled Over Lufthansa’s $4 Million Fine
“Iran is Trying to Destroy Israel, And I Rewarded Them With Billions of Dollars,” Biden Said, “Why Isn’t Lufthansa Also Receiving a Huge Cash Reward?!”

Upon learning that Lufthansa Airlines has been fined $4 Millon by the US Dept. of Transportation for discriminating against a group of jewish passengers, a befuddled President Biden reportedly scratched his head on Tuesday and told reporters: “I don’t get it! The mullahs of Iran are trying to destroy Israel, and I rewarded them with billions of dollars of frozen assets for their trouble, and you’re telling me Lufthansa is going to pay $4 million for their anti semitic discriminatory behavior?! What’s up with the double standard?! Lufthansa should receive the same monetary rewards that Iran received from me! Period!”
The President later told reporters that he will soon fire the decision makers in the Dept. of Transportation who imposed the aforementioned fine, and he will also ask the Dept. of Justice to levy millions of dollars in fines to those who were responsible for issuing the $4 million fine.”
The President also reassured reporters that he will soon enact a debt forgiveness program on behalf of Lufthansa Airlines that will essentially erase the $4 million dollar fine.
“There’s no way Lufthansa can afford to dole out free pretzels and peanuts to their passengers if they’re ponying up $4 million in fines!” the President said. “Passengers must learn to forgive and forget, otherwise there’ll be no more pretzels and peanuts for them to nosh on during those long dreary international flights.”
