Two separate structure fires in Lakewood on Tuesday were caused by lightning strikes during a powerful summer storm, the LPD confirmed.
The fires, which occurred at residences on Joe Parker Road and Ridge Avenue, were quickly extinguished by the Lakewood Fire Department.
The first incident took place at 435 Ridge Avenue, where lightning struck a shed behind the home, setting it ablaze. The fire was brought under control by the LFD. Although the fire was limited to the shed, an inspection revealed issues with the home’s electrical box, prompting officials to red-tag the main residence as well. The family was forced to leave for the night and was connected with the Red Cross for temporary assistance.
Shortly after, emergency crews were dispatched to a second fire at 777 Joe Parker Road, where a lightning strike ignited a structure fire at the residence. Firefighters from the LFD responded swiftly and extinguished the flames.
The Township inspectors subsequently red-tagged the property, deeming it unsafe for occupancy. The resident arranged to stay with a friend.
