New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy signed into law today legislation that prohibits the use of electric vehicle (EV) charging spaces by vehicles that are not EVs or by EVs that are not actively charging. The law aims to ensure that limited EV charging stations are available for their intended purpose.
“Parking in a space clearly designated for EV charging stations and not using it for charging is not dissimilar from parking in front of a gas pump, except that there are far fewer EV charging stations than gas pumps,” Senator Diegnan (D-Middlesex), Chair of the Senate Transportation Committee, said in a statement.
“Businesses and government provide EV charging stations to better serve clients and residents. Using the space just for parking actively disrupts the intended use of the space, and makes the investment in a charging station less effective than it otherwise would be.”
The new law adds electric vehicle charging spaces to the locations where parking is restricted under certain circumstances. Vehicles that are not EVs, or EVs not actively charging, are prohibited from occupying spaces that are clearly marked with signage and pavement markings indicating they are reserved for plug-in EVs.
Individuals who violate the law will face a fine of $55 for the first offense, $100 for the second offense, and $200 for the third or subsequent offense. Municipalities also have the discretion to tow vehicles in violation, with the registered owner or lessee responsible for towing and storage costs.

It won’t be enforced in Lakewood
This is unconstitutional!!!. Because you choose to purchase an electric vehicle, I am not allowed to park there. A chutzpah!
Does the bill have a provision allowing Aliens to squat in these spots?
I work in a place where the best spots are charging stations. it would seem unfair to need to find a further spot in the rain because i dont have an ev.
Are those cars paying taxes on the charge?
