As first reported yesterday on TLS Communities, two people were hospitalized Wednesday afternoon following a serious crash on Route 70 in Manchester — where police say they also uncovered suspected drugs inside one of the vehicles.
The collision occurred around 12:30 p.m. near Woodview Drive. According to investigators, a 2021 Hyundai Elantra traveling westbound suddenly veered onto the shoulder before attempting a U-turn across traffic. A 2016 Mack tri-axle roll-off dumpster truck behind the car struck the Hyundai, leaving it badly damaged.
Emergency crews extricated the Hyundai’s driver, 33-year-old Shakiya Duncan of Atlantic City, along with two passengers. Duncan and 19-year-old Dajuan Daniels of Atlantic City were rushed to Jersey Shore University Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. The third passenger, 35-year-old Jessica Almanzar of Manchester, was taken to Community Medical Center as a precaution. The truck driver, 69-year-old Peter Lewis of Jackson, was not hurt.
During the investigation, officers discovered suspected controlled dangerous substances inside the Hyundai. Police say improper turning and suspected impaired driving contributed to the crash. DWI and additional criminal charges are expected.
The Manchester Township Police Traffic Safety Unit is handling the ongoing investigation.
