UPDATE: Accident Involving Cyclist Shuts Section of Route 9 for Hours

2A cyclist was seriously injured last night after being struck by a vehicle on Route 9, police say.

At approximately 9:30 PM Sunday night, a 37-year-old cyclist traveling in the right southbound lane at Ford Road was struck by a vehicle traveling in the same lane.

The driver sustained a minor hand injury and was treated and released from Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus in Lakewood.

The cyclist was reported to have serious injuries and was transported to Jersey Shore Medical Center where he is listed in stable condition.

The investigation shut Route 9 south until close to midnight.

The crash is still under investigation and any witnesses are asked to call Howell Twp. Police Traffic Safety at 732-938-4575 ext. 2831.

  1. There are a ton of cyclist on the road now especially the bike for chai guys , the cyclists have to have proper lighting and reflectors and drivers have to be aware that be if lack of bike lanes they need to use extra caution especially at night .

  2. If cyclists aren’t using them, it should not be the drivers fault. Don’t assume that all cyclists follow the rules. When there is a shoulder, the cyclists should use the shoulder and not right lane especially that late in the evening.

  3. Maybe the driver was in the shoulder not the biker in the road. Also it happened by an intersection so maybe the car was coming from the crossroad.

  4. It says the cyclist was in the southbound lane. It also says the driver was also in the southbound lane. You should read the article before you comment.
