U.S. Senator Menendez wants Probe of Anti-Semitic Tweets

menendezSen. Robert Menendez will ask the U.S. Department of Justice to look into tweets made by several New Jersey teens that intimated violence against the region’s Orthodox Jewish community, according to a report in the USA Today.

The tweets by the teens – one of whom is the daughter of a New Jersey State Police sergeant – featured images of swastikas, Nazi salutes and included references to bombing and running over Jews in Lakewood.

The Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office did not file charges against the teens, finding that their actions did not pose a credible threat.

But Menendez, D-N.J., wants the Justice Department to ensure that the tweets do not pose a threat to public safety or homeland security, said Steven Sandberg, a spokesman for the senator.

  1. Just wondering if the situation was reversed and someone from Lakewood community posted on Facebook about the sergeant state trooper? would they also Say no charges are necessary.

  2. Although disturbing I don’t believe any crime was committed. Regardless these are juveniles, almost nothing would happen to them anyway. Menashe Miller spoke to Jackson Township Mayor about this incident I believe so I’m sure they’re taking some measures eliminate the chances of this happening again. I’d be shocked if they’re indicted for any wrong doing. Let’s let the small acts of anti Semitism go so we can deal with the larger ones. Thank you Senator.

  3. Thank you Senator Menendez for showing your sensitivity to the Jewish race imparticular and really to all of humanity. Hitler may have been the largest, cruelest mass murderer to have ever lived. His wounds are still fresh as there are still survivors and their close family members amongst us. The teenagers involved may not have committed any crimes, and may not have intended to commit any crimes. But, getting dressed up and posing as Hitler was obviously pré-meditated. Hopefully, the youths are under going counseling, and can be helped.
As a member of the Lakewood Jewish community I appreciate that our NJ senator was obviously disturbed by these actions too. Can the senator also look into whether there is any truth to the rumors that there was a spike in the amount of tickets issued by Jackson Police Officers to Jewish drivers after the tweets were posted.
It would have been appreciated if prominent members of the Jackson community (and Asbury Park Press) would have come out publicly and shown some sensitivity too. There is a significant anti Semitic element in Jackson Township. I live about a mile from the Jackson Township border and have received many anti Semitic comments over the years from vehicles coming in that direction while walking on our sabbath. At the township meeting last year when the Jewish school wanted to get approvals it appeared that much of the opposition was anti Semitic. I would like to ask Senator Menendez to speak with the Jackson Township officials, politicians, and principals about what they are doing regarding anti semitism.
Thank you once again Senator Menendez.
