(VIDEO with Todd Day in extended article) Stop! Look three ways! Two intersections in Lakewood are about to become a four-way STOP intersections this week, (as first reported via video here on TLS). Drivers and pedestrians can expect to see new four-way STOP signs and warnings at Fourth Street and Lexington Avenue as well as Seventh Street and Park Avenue this week. For the past few weeks, Lakewood Public Works has been placing informational signs at each location to alert drivers and pedestrians that changes are coming to those intersections.
Todd Day, Lakewood Township engineer, has announced that two new changes are being implemented this week, the week of November 16, just after the morning rush hour, around 9:00 or 10:00 a.m., in a continuing effort to improve traffic and pedestrian safety in Lakewood. (The project was postponed to the week of the 16th due to the rain).
Day says, “We will be using changeable message signs on each approach the day of installation and then for about three days after at each location. We will have these signs, along with a ‘STOP Ahead’ sign posts for each new STOP sign.”
As an extra reminder to stop no matter from which directions you are approaching the intersection, drivers can expect to see twenty-four inch stop bars and “STOP” markings on the road, and reflective red posts.
The recently discussed Lakewood Road Action Plan called for four-way stops at Fourth and Lexington, by the library, and Park Avenue and Seventh Street as a safety measure because people are inching out to see around the cars. (Mobile users click here to view video on youtube). Fran Kirschner/TLS.

after how many days will these new signs be taken down?
depends on how many people complain to MM & ML
Why can’t they put a traffic light up in BOTH locations? This town has bh grown by leaps and bounds. Why would the township comittee not consider a traffic light instead of four way stop signs?
Just asking.
This is totally ridiculous. Anyone who drives by the 4 way stop sign at Park and fourth knows how these 4 way stop signs slow traffic to a crawl and cause many, many accidents since almost nobody seems to know how the order of cars is supposed to be.
This is a silly decision and another waste of taxpayer money.
tzippis right, but there must be a light there
there are laws as to who has right of way at a four way.
If you dont know how to use a four way stop go back and take your test over again. Or it could be that there are plenty of drivers out there that never took a drivers test. Besides they cant put up a traffic light because there is not enough money in the account. Maybe they could fix a lot of the problems in the town if more & more addresses would stay on the tax roles. Maybe they can get back some of the profit from the land sale they lost out on.
its a start wow buit why r they so lazyy just put a light up
I am a big believer that many more places all over lakewood they should put 4 way stop signs it will prevent a lot more accidents and once people get used to it it will become routine. the laws by a 2 way stop sign is whoever was there first goes first it doesnt make a difference whether you are going straight or making a left same is true by a 4 way stop sign. IF youre in doubt who got there first you have to yield for the car on your right. If there is a person in the crosswalk who will block you from getting through the intersection you have to wait.
happens to be 4 and park is avery weird intersection and you cant always see who got there first but thers would be a lot more accidents if it would be a 2 way stop sign.
2 intersections with 4 stop signs? sounds like another case of shtayim shehain arba
By the way, if anybody from the state is reading this, you forgot to remove one of the “right turn only” signs. it’s the one when you leave Shop Rite Plaza onto Route 9, you can’t make a left.
