After a week of political squabbling, Governor Murphy signed the budget passed by the state Legislature. Murphy and Senate President Stephen Sweeney have been in a war of name-calling and mudslinging since then, with several instances of them comparing each other to President Trump, of course in a negative way.

On Monday, President Trump decided to weigh in on the matter himself. In a Twitter post, Trump wrote “Congratulations to legislators in New Jersey for not passing taxes that would have driven large numbers of high end taxpayers out of the state. Many were planning to leave, & will now be staying. New York & others should start changing their thought process on taxes, fast!”

The post ingeniously took a swipe at Governor Murphy and Senate President Sweeney. Trump took an obvious jab at Murphy, commending lawmakers who passed a budget that didn’t include a tax on millionaires, one of Murphy’s primary initiatives in office. In doing so, Trump also put the Senate President in a difficult bind. Sweeney has been comparing Murphy to Trump for over a week, saying he “is starting to resemble Donald Trump in bombast, inconsistency and unreliability.” After Murphy signed the budget, Sweeney again went after Murphy, saying “This actually reminds me of Donald Trump. He declares victory when he doesn’t get his way.” Now, it is Sweeney and other Democratic lawmakers in the Legislature who were lauded by Trump, something they will have to answer for.

Governor Murphy immediately grabbed the opportunity to use Trump’s tweet to take a swipe at Sweeney. In a Twitter post, Murphy wrote “We all know @realDonaldTrump is fighting for millionaires like himself. I’m fighting for New Jersey’s middle class and all those working to get there.”

As always, President Trump has successfully weighed in on an issue completely irrelevant to him and turn two people, both his political foes, against each other. Whether it was by design or not, it was a brilliant move.
