TRPD Seeking Auxiliary Police Officers; Few days left

TRPD: We are taking applications for residents of Toms River who are interested in joining our Voluntary Auxiliary Police Unit. We anticipate chosen individuals to enter the training academy this fall. Please pick up an application in the main lobby of police headquarters.

The Auxiliary Police Unit is a volunteer branch of the Office of Emergency Management. During the course of their training mission, they work with the Toms River Police Department to reduce safety hazards, assist in emergency or disaster situations, and provide services as deemed necessary by the Chief of Police.

The Toms River Auxiliary Police Unit is a 100% volunteer organization comprised of 1 Captain, 3 sergeants and 15 officers who strive to serve their community. Members are considered the “eyes and ears” of the police department and assist with patrols, parades, first aid calls, disabled vehicles, animal calls, funerals, emergencies, disasters, crashes, traffic direction, crowd control, DWI checkpoints, and various other township functions.

The training and experience gained while in the organization is often a stepping stone utilized in the pursuit of becoming a full-time law enforcement officer. Auxiliary Officers are required to volunteer a minimum of 8 hours per month and must participate in 25% of details and callouts. Auxiliary Police do not carry a firearm and do not have arrest powers.

The deadline to apply is August 31.

The Auxiliary Police training program is run under the direction Off. Brian Jarka, bjarka@trpolice.org

  1. “Auxiliary Police do not carry a firearm and do not have arrest powers”

Don’t citizens have a right to make a citizens arrest?

  2. Why doesn’t lakewood allow Auxillary Police?

In NY they have auxillary police. They come in very handy when the PD is overloaded or when they need extra help. Besides, they are an extra eye out in the public.

PS maybe the Mayor can address this question on TLS

    • LCSW is a great organization.

However, they are not auxillary cops.

      From wikipedia:
The New York City Police Department Auxiliary Police is a volunteer reserve police force which is a subdivision of the Patrol Services Bureau of the New York City Police Department. Auxiliary Police Officers assist the NYPD with uniformed patrols, providing traffic control, crowd control, and other major events.

Note: Auxillary Police are UNIFORMED – which means that they are an actual part of the PD. …and probably more respected as such.

  3. It seems that it’s hard to introduce new ‘helpers’ to an organization (PD).
Hence, the reason why LPD alwways turns down the idea of creating an auxilary dept. (maybe the mayor can weigh in on this)

When auxilary cops do a great job, Many times it can put pressure on paid officers to do their jobs more seriously.

    People don’t like pressure.

Remember: of course, competition is always good for the consumer. In this case that would be the community.

  4. the Mashgiach zt”l would relate that he remebered that in Kelm the Police officer was Jewish and he learned Iggeres HaRamban each Shabbos and never lost his calm

  5. The LCSW of Toms River. Any toms river residents ready to join and make a great kiddish Hashem and also showing them that we care about everyone not only yidden.
This will also STOP the hatred in toms river of yidden moving in, if they see us residents being part of the community by Joining

    • Unfortunately it will do no such thing. Any altercation between the CW and a resident will be Page 1 headlines, while any help they render will not be considered newsworthy by our “friends” in the media.
