Traveling? Travel Insurance is a Must

Submitted: It’s the summer, and thousands of people are traveling, including many around the globe.

Unfortunately many don’t realize the importance of having travel insurance.

Just in the past few days, I personally heard of multiple people who were injured during a vacation overseas and required hospitalization and a lot of medical attention. Luckily, most of the recent incidents I heard about were covered because the traveler had simple insurance.

But I know of an incident that occurred a couple of weeks ago in which the traveler did not take out insurance, and was in need of medical assistance. He will now likely need to pay thousands of dollars out of pocket for the ordeal.

These things are easily avoidable.

Some probably think it’s a whole big deal to get travel insurance, yet don’t realize it literally takes a couple of minutes, and costs a few dollars per person. The last time I traveled, I paid about $60 dollars for $1,000,000 in coverage a few family members for over a week overseas. It’s a small amount to pay for the peace of mind.

I’m not an insurance broker or a travel agent. I’m a regular traveler like yourself. Hence, I’m not sending in any links or recommendations. A simple google search or call to your travel agent will get you what you need.

Hatzlacha and safe travels.

  1. Very important point! I travel often for work and always take out insurance – takes a few min to do, and has saved me many times with lost luggage, delays, medical etc – it covers a lot and is very cheap.

    • I’m actually in the real estate industry, and it makes no difference to me if you or anyone here buys insurance or not. I submitted this as someone who cares about a fellow yid, and no other reason. Feel free to take the advice or leave it, I won’t be gaining or losing either way. And if one of the many brokers out there make a couple dollars (literally) in the process, that’s fine with me too!

      Safe travels either way!

    • It’s not easy for a Frum Yid to lie & be oiver on a Mitzva in the Torah, Midvar Sheker Tirchok. It would have been better for you to be Dan Lekaf Zechus & assume the letter writer submitted this out of genuine concern for others, not for his personal gain. Some people are very distrustful of other people & automatically assume there’s a selfish motivation behind every good act. This isn’t a healthy way to view & interact with other people. I thank the letter writer for taking the time to submit this.

  2. I too, travelled to Israel for under a week, but I made sure to have travel insurance. It cost me about $27.00. It’s appropriate hishtadlus. And I hoped that the insurance company would only profit from the gantze ma’ase.

  3. Thank you for this important reminder, travel insurance often gets forgotten when planning a trip.
I recently spent thousands of dollars as a result of an accident in another country, the first question others asked is if I bought travel insurance. The $34 I spent spared me from worrying about how I would cover the hospital stay and other medical expenses.

    Safe travels

  4. It is true that it is easy to CLAIM what you are not when you don’t say your name. But as he wrote in the letter, it is very hard to BE a travel agent if you don’t mention your own agency.

  5. 3 min on the insurance website and a $34 policy for 10 days. Saved us $75,000 in hospital bills and paid the return flight home. From an injury sustained on the trip. Buy insurance! You’re simply being irresponsible of you don’t!

  6. My daughters went to the US from Israel for three weeks and travel insurance for both for the whole time was less than $100. covered medical emergencies like hospitalization CH”V.

  7. Travel insurance is generally significantly cheaper than regular medical insurance you have at home. Credit cards used to provide an element of travel insurance, but the coverage in those has been largely stripped away over the years. It’s generally a very reasonable cost, and a worthwhile investment for the peace of mind.
