Traffic Fatalities in Lakewood Down Sharply in 2024 Despite a 12% Increase Statewide

There were four fatalities on Lakewood roads in 2024, including three pedestrians

Four people were killed on Lakewood streets in 2024, a 55% decrease from the nine fatalities on township roads in 2023.

Statewide, there have been 684 fatalities, a 13% increase from the 606 deaths in 2022.

Of the four Lakewood fatalities, three were pedestrians while the rest were drivers or passengers.

Countywide, there were a total of 46 fatalities, a slight increase over the 44 fatalities in 2023, with nine in Toms River, seven in Manchester, and six in Jackson. Of the 46 traffic fatalities in Ocean County in 2024, 28 were drivers, four were passengers, two were on a bike and the rest were pedestrians.

Although the number of deaths statewide have been increasing in recent years, it is still well below the 880 people who were killed on New Jersey roads in 1990.
