Township Official Reminds Drivers To Remove Snow From Vehicle Before Driving

A Township officials asked that TLS remind motorists that that driving with snow on top of your vehicle is extremely dangerous and can result in a summons.

The law – which went into effect in 2010, requires motorists to remove all ice and snow from their vehicles before traveling on the roads. The requirements include removing snow and ice from the hood, trunk, windshield, windows and roof of the vehicle.

Violators will get pulled over if the officer believes the accumulated ice or snow may pose a threat to other drivers or to pedestrians. Fines are not less than $25 or more than $75 for each offense regardless of whether any snow or ice is dislodged from the vehicle.

Fines increase to $200 to $1,000 when injuries or property damage occur. Commercial motor vehicle drivers face fines ranging from $500 to $1,500 for each offense. There are no points involved. TLS.

  1. yeah right. that law will be paid as much attention to in this town as the no-talking-on-cell-phone-while-driving-law. most lakewoodians feel they are above the law and its disgusting. hopefully no one will be injured from snow flying off a minivan

  2. It should not matter if you are going to get a ticket or not. One should always completely clear their car of all snow and ice before driving! Flying snow from the a vehicle can cause someone else to have an accident.
It’s just common courtesy to clean your vehicle thoroughly! Including making sure that your lights-head lights, directional lights and rear/break lights- are clear and visible!

  3. snow on the roof has probably never caused an accident, just another ridiculous demand. I am very safety cautious and have been driving many years without ever paying attention to such nonsense. It is like the post office, ask them why they will not let you use elctric tape etc. and you will find nonsense. I might go so far as to call snow on the roof possibly dangerous. “extremely dangerous”, no way! show me a case where it ever caused an accident except in some overpaid government beaurocrat’s imagination.
