Township Committee To Hand Over Reduced Fire Budget

The Township Committee is expected to hand over the reduced Fire Budget this evening. During the last Township meeting, the Committee and LFD announced that they have come to an agreement with the Fire Department to cut $150,000 from the Fire District Budget, bringing the budget down to $3,106,00 from $3,256,000, for a total of $453,000 lower than last year’s budget.

The Deputy Mayor and Committeeman Meir Lichtenstien, who were appointed to the task to review the budget, recommended the cuts and handed it back to the Committee for approval. The cuts were from utilities and general expenses.

However, due to statutory reasons, the budget was not approved at that meeting.

Last year’s budget was $3,559,000 after being cut by $143,000.00.

Additionally, the Fire Commissioners agreed to use $1,000,000 from the surplus, bringing down the tax levy to $2,106, 000, officials say. TLS.

  1. Now how about everyone read todays Asbury Park Press and see just one fire district in Toms River is over 7 million dollars.. and they have 3 districts in that Township.. I would say the Lakewood Board of Fire Commissoner’s have done a great job.

  2. May God bless Lakewood’s Bravest. Residents sleep easy knowing that this great Fire Department, lead by the well qualified Board of Fire Commissioners is the best.

    Vince is missed.

  3. # 6. I guess there will be no longer anything for you all to do now, except buy your own ticket if you want to see the show. Why do they “need covering” anyway? We have 2 paid trucks remember, and a few extra trucks, with extra paid guys. It will be mandatory work, during fireworks. So whos loosing out here????? Not the taxpayers.

  4. #7, I beleive it is a requirment at a public event to have a fire truck present during fire works. This is a State Mandate which is usually done by the volunteer dept. Now understanding local goverment and unions. The paid staff will have to be paid overtime to sit, he cannot go around and answer all of the false CO alarms that are offered every day. It might be easier to donate to a volunteer truck than to pay overtime to a career staff. For that overtime, I will take every fireworks detail. Think about it….

  5. #7 The tax payers will be losing out because the volunteers did all of the extra details (fireworks, bread burning, etc.) for free. You cannot tie up the paid guys for these events in case of a real emergency. The town will have to now pay the off-duty paid guys to cover these events at an overtime rate. So now tell me who is losing out????

  6. number 7 how do you say the tax payers are noy loseing out ? if the voulanteers do not cover the fireworls for free we will have to pay overtime . that is going to cost the tax payers money . what about the bread burning or fireworks at the lake ? we will have to pay for a service that was once free to us. seems to me for the 150k we cut from the fire budget is gonna cost us about 300k smart move

  7. the budget was fine the way it was. taxpayers wanna save some money? start looking at the board of ed, not the men and women who risk their lives to protect yours and your familys
