For the first time in nearly 10 years, the Lakewood Township has appointed a new Chief of its Emergency Medical Services department, TLS has learned.
Crystal Van de Zilver, a longtime EMS employee, head of the Union, and wife of a former Lakewood police officer, has been appointed to the position, which eliminates the current position of Supervisor. She is possibly the first female hired as a emergency department head in Lakewood.
In advertising the position earlier this year, the Township described the position for an individual to “plan, supervise, organize and direct the activities of the Lakewood Emergency Medical Services Department.” The Chief will report directly to the Township Manager.
The EMS Chief position was last held by Gar Woodfield approximately 10 years ago. The position of Supervisor was the highest filled position until now, held by Scott Carter.
“As a longtime employee, and with this being her only job, Crystal is focused and dedicated to the Lakewood Township,” Emergency Services Liaison and Township Committeeman Meir Lichtenstein tells TLS. “Her experience as the Union head, and the respect she has from her peers and other agencies in town, will take EMS to the next level, says Lichtenstein.”
Lichtenstien also thanked Carter for his services, and looks forward to continue working with him as an employee.
“Scott Carter, who declined to apply for the position, will remain as an employee of the Lakewood Township EMS and will continue to lend the breadth of his knowledge and experience to Lakewood,” says Lichtenstien.
Lakewood First Aid heads also welcomed the news.
“Crystal’s proven integrity, professionalism, and unwavering dedication to emergency services will make her a great leader and Chief of EMS,” says Lakewood First Aid Captain Ralph Lasry. “I look forward to working closely with Crystal and her team to usher in a new era of outstanding emergency response and exceptional care for Lakewood residents. Congratulations to a well deserved and earned promotion!”
