I can understand fireworks on July 2, the day Congress adopted Lee’s resolution declaring independence, as John Adams said the second “ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward, forevermore.”

    July 3 was a day for revisions, but probably not the day that Franklin convinced Jefferson to revise Locke’s “life, liberty and property” with “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.”
