For the first time since its founding, the renowned chazarah program at Bais Medrash Govoah will be holding a dinner, giving the greater Lakewood community an opportunity to pay tribute to the program that has highlighted the importance of reviewing what one has learnt.
Recognizing that the key to successful learning is chazarah, this organized bechinah program, in which yungeleit from participating chaburos at Bais Medrash Govoah take a rigorous closed-book exam on the material learned each month, was founded fifteen years ago.
Currently, Even Habochen has an enrollment of 34 chaburos consisting of over 500 yungeleit, with an annual budget of approximately $300,000. During the last decade and a half, Even Habochen has administered thousands of bechinos on virtually every miktzoah in Shas.
Founded and run by Rabbi Chaim Moses, Even Habochen has created an incentive to promote chazarah by rewarding the participants monetarily based on the level of achievement on their exams. The bechinos are written and graded by the roshei chaburah, and a mark of 80 or higher entitles a yungerman to a stipend, while the highest mark receives an added bonus.
“There is a different level of learning taking place, and because so many chaburos participate in [Even Habochen], it has such a great impact on the other talmidim,” the rosh yeshiva, Rav Dovid Schustal, related. “There has been a gevaldige chizuk that can be seen among the lomdin due to the Keren. The roshei chaburah attest to it and the yungeleit attest to it. The mechayev to remember what you have learned, and the mechayev to understand it absolutely clearly, is very powerful.”
With the dinner just hours away, while past achievements are being celebrated, Even Habochen has its eyes on the future.
“With the success of this dinner, our goal is to add many more chaburos to the program,” Rabbi Moses remarked. “There are hundreds of talmidim clamoring to join, and our desire is use the hatzlachah of the dinner to allow those bnei Torah to benefit from Keren Even Habochen by enrolling and thus enhancing their learning. We truly hope that with the support we are receiving, we won’t have to turn down additional chaburos that wish to join.”
At the dinner this evening, the original vaad members of Even Habochen, who ran the program at its inception, overseeing the testing, disbursing the stipends, performing secretarial work and engaging in fundraising, will be honored. They are Rabbi and Mrs. Chaim Moses, Rabbi and Mrs. Moshe Kahan, Rabbi and Mrs. Yitzchok Weinstein, and Rabbi and Mrs. Shraga Goldberg.
The dinner chairman will be Rav Hershel Hisiger, R”M at Mesivta of Lakewood and rov of Prospect Park.
Divrei pesichah will be delivered by Rav Aryeh Malkiel Kotler, rosh yeshiva of Bais Medrash Govoah.
The guest speaker will be Rav Chaim Yehoshua Hoberman, rosh yeshiva of Mesivta of Long Beach.
