A Toms River woman was pronounced dead at the scene following a head-on crash Thursday afternoon on Route 70 in Manchester Township, authorities said today.
The crash occurred on Thursday, July 30, at approximately 5:15 p.m. near mile marker 43. According to investigators, a gray 2019 Honda Civic was traveling eastbound when it crossed the center line into the westbound lanes, where it collided head-on with a white 2022 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD traveling westbound.
The Honda came to rest facing north in the westbound lane with heavy front-end damage, while the Silverado also sustained heavy front-end damage and came to rest facing west in the westbound lane.
The driver of the Honda, identified as 53-year-old Tammy Huth of Toms River, was the vehicle’s sole occupant and was wearing her seat belt. Both the front and side airbags deployed; however, she was unresponsive when first responders arrived and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the Silverado, identified as 32-year-old Colin Michaelis of Lindenwold, was also the sole occupant of his vehicle and was wearing his seat belt. Both the front and side airbags deployed, and he sustained minor, non-life-threatening injuries.
Route 70 was closed for several hours while emergency personnel conducted the investigation and cleared the scene.
Responding agencies included the Manchester Township Division of Emergency Services, Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit, Ocean County Medical Examiner’s Office, Whiting Volunteer Fire Department, New Jersey Department of Transportation, New Jersey State Police, Priced Rite Towing, and Oliverie Funeral Home.
The crash remains under investigation by Patrolman Sage Sysol of the Manchester Township Police Department’s Traffic Safety Section. Authorities said failure to maintain lane appears to have been the primary contributing factor.
Either she had a medical episode (no idea) or it can be there is some issue there. There seem to be rumble strips along the center line, perhaps they can be widened a bit to jut more into the lane. From their presence, this seems to have been a problem in the past. I’m probably stating the obvious to investigators. Just being a good Samaritan.
