Today: Tax Day Deadline For O.C. Residents

tax dayIf you live in Monmouth County and you haven’t filed your taxes yet, you can breathe a little. But if you live in Ocean County, time’s almost up. The Internal Revenue Service has extended the deadline for Monmouth County residents to file their income tax returns … and pay any tax they owe … until May 11. The state Division of Taxation has put off its own deadline until May 11 as well. The decision follows President Barack Obama’s declaration of Monmouth, and 11 other New Jersey counties, as federal disaster areas after last month’s severe rain and wind storms. For Ocean County residents, the traditional April 15 tax deadline stands. Taxpayers who live or have a business outside the disaster areas but were affected by the storms nonetheless must call the IRS at 1-866-562-5227 to request an extension.

Still, many taxpayers were prepared for the April 15 deadline, no matter where they live.

Ocean Grove resident Barbara Sweeney was ready to mail her federal tax return Wednesday. A sales representative at a department store, Sweeney said it took time to assemble the documents she needed.

“I was just busy and so it went in today,” Sweeney said. “It takes time to sit down and figure them out and do it correctly.”

Self-employed truck driver George Kabouchy of Wall mailed his forms on Wednesday as well. His accountant dropped off his tax information, but he visited the IRS office in Freehold Township to pick up another needed form.

“It’s got to go sometime,” Kabouchy said. “There’s no reason to wait. When it’s done, he (his accountant) comes over, gives it to me and it goes out.”

One storm in mid-March affected 160,000 Jersey Central Power & Light customers, snapping telephone poles, toppling trees and causing power outages.

The disaster declaration made funding available through the Federal Emergency Management Agency for people and business owners in Monmouth, Atlantic, Bergen, Cape May, Essex, Gloucester, Mercer, Middlesex, Morris, Passaic, Somerset and Union counties. Read full article in APP
